I count 27 people in that photo, which is the same number of cast members listed on the website. 27? Seemed more than that in the flesh - they space out well. Out of curiosity and off the back of this comment, I looked up the on stage cast sizes of other musicals. 27 seems to be fairly in the middle. Tuesday and Wednesday were invited Dress Runs - Last night was a special "first preview" for competition winners and industry. I can post my full thoughts if people are interested but I was going to wait until after the official first preview this evening. Let me know  |

Just to say, we are not the press. We don’t get any of the privileges the press or even some theatre bloggers get access to such as free tickets and as such we don’t have to conform to the traditions around reviews. Also worth bearing in mind that once a publication has given its star review it’s set in stone for the life of that production. Not the case here. TheatreBoard members often visit the same show multiple times. Some will visit a show in previews and after the official opening and may change their opinions as the show develops. Our star rating polls accommodate this and if someone wants to change their two star preview rating to a five star rating after seeing it later in the run they can. It’s a totally different system to that of the press, it is totally independent and in my opinion more likely to reflect true audience opinion.
For those reasons if someone wants to post a review during previews, or even as a result of seeing an invited dress rehearsal there are no rules preventing it. It’s entirely up to them. It’s not “bad form” according to how this website operates.

Usually to be invited to a dress run you're friends & family of production/cast/theatre staff, people who worked on the fit up & associated people, suppliers etc, people who made the costumes, set etc...

I just want to know if it was good or not. I wasn't that interested in the Broadway iteration. But with the refurbished theater, new sets and Samantha Barks (one of my favorites) I have some interest in seeing this. The real question is do these things add a considerable improvement over the Broadway version?

I agree if he wants to post let him post x Thanks all. Here goes Overall I really enjoyed it. I thought Oliver Ormson was fantastic as Hans and Stephanie McKeon was brilliant as Anna. Their scenes together were particularly good. Special shout out to Joshua St Clair who plays Pabbie too. I couldn't keep my eyes off him in his scenes. Apparently I now have a thing for green dreadlocks haha Sam Barks - she's absolutely charming and plays the part really well. I must admit I was unsure when she was cast but last night she sold Elsa to me. I do feel she could have been a bit stronger with the big songs but then I find that these things are easily fixed by throwing the mic volume up (at the end of Let It Go for example). Her acting made up for it. I really hate that they cut the "First Time in Forever Reprise" and replaced it with "I Can't Lose You" - I loved the reprise  It's a really fun family show and I was pleasantly surprised at how little noise there was around me from the audience which was largely under 10s - though I guess this will vary from day to day. I don't know much about the Broadway production, but I noticed that "What Do You Know About Love?" was different in terms of staging. {Spoiler - click to view}
Rather than Anna and Hans "Climbing", they are walking along a bridge which in itself was pretty impressive. more and more of it seemed to keep coming out of the wings - It'd be fun to see how it's stored backstage as it's absolutely huge! It was a good evening and I'm looking forward to seeing it again at some point. I might make a trip when SB is off and see someone different in the role Sorry - I'm not a critic so this isn't a "review" as such, just some thoughts. If anyone else and specific questions then feel free to reply and I'll answer them the best I can. |

(And I did a Masters in Theatre Criticism...waste of my life) Really cool observations, thanks for sharing! I'm seeing this next month, I've never been into Frozen but more intrigued for the production (Samantha was terrific in Pretty Woman.) I second what's been said previously. This is a discussion board so we should feel free to geek out about theatre, have opinions and debate. |

Well I enjoyed it. It’s not a great musical, nearly all of the new songs are absolutely forgettable and it’s visually not as good as it should be, but the cast were very strong and the refurbishment of the theatre is absolutely stunning. It was just a pleasure to sit in that wonderful theatre again after 2 years.
I don’t see this running long- maybe a year or so ? But it’s definitely and improvement on the Broadway production.
I suspect your average family of theatregoers will have a perfectly lovely time, and really it’s all for those little girls who still haven’t gotten over Elsa!
