I agree it is a travesty that Clare and also Stuart don't get the final bow. Especially considering Sheena literally has one scene and a duet in Act 2 at that's it, while these two are singing and dancing their asses off the whole show. That said, I thought Sheena was senstational overall, as is Tom.

Buzzing my TITS OFF to see this on Saturday afternoon from the front row! Couple of pics have been released. Unfortunate that 'Katharine Hepburn' is 'Katherine Hepburn'. And 'The Gay Divorce' should really be 'The Gay Divorcee'. Oops. Someone's not done their homework - though this is quite a fun game. Any others?! Rapsody in Black... |

Talking about the lack of diversity in the cast, there are several mixed race girls in the ensemble which obviously is better than an all white cast. However, there are no black men and no black women (bar the mixed race women). Surely in a cast of 50, they could have made it a bit more diverse? Show does look amazing tho and I think it will actually have a decent run now

After all the discussion of lack of diversity, I was surprised to see that one of the first ensemble members you see centre stage is a mixed race woman. But I can completely understand that it could of course be more diverse of course (there is no colour in the men at all in this show). It didn't bother me, but I don't usually notice that kind of thing anyway, that may be me being just dumb but I don't pick up on it, I just see performers as performers.
I can too see this having a good run too, it is gonna be wildfire with the word of mouth!

That scene with the girls lying on the floor with the mirror, I'm telling ya'll who haven't seen it yet, your breath will be taken away, stomped on and given to Jesus! Those photos are stunning, fitting the show perfectly!
And see what I mean about Sheena, looks amazing but they have done her up more like a drag queen!

Let us not forget two things... these dancers, that have been cast in this specific show, may of just been the best dancers for the show. I have seen several of them in other shows and they are brilliant dancers, there just may of happened to of not been any black performers good enough for this specific show. The other thing, on the flipside, is why can't there be more white performers in the ensemble of Dreamgirls, as an example? There are two white people in the whole show of Dreamgirls, so you could look at that as why couldn't they cast more white people in that show. It does work both ways.
It sounds like I am complaining at you haha, I'm not, I do agree with you haha.

A tiny bit of inside knowledge. Mini Tibs is an advanced tapper. It takes years and years (along with advanced ballet training) to master the technique that, I gather from the rave reviews, is needed in 42nd Street. The likes of Tom Chambers can pull the wool over people's eyes as a performer (I love him so he's allowed to be a bit rubbish!) But to gain this level of technique, 3 years of twice a week tap classes at performing arts college is simply not going to be enough I don't think.

Oh looking at photos did remind me of one thing... that picture of Clare dancing on top of the piano in the hot red outfit, you don't see her feet from the front row. But that lasts literally about 30 seconds and then she is back down.  |

To change it you'd have to rewrite it, top to bottom. The show's current book could never support the depth of story you're asking for. It's based on a Depression era movie that was deliberately upbeat and hopeful and razzle dazzle - no one wanted to see bitter reality reflected. The show stays true to that approach. The Warner Brothers musicals of the time were known for being darker, more gritty, less glitzy, 42nd Street is no exception (the highlight of this approach being Remember My Forgotten Man from Gold Diggers of 1933) . The stage adaptation of 42nd Street missed the point of it somewhat but a good director should be able to make the backdrop matter. Given the current state of the world, a 42nd Street against a backdrop of economic uncertainty and rising authoritarianism would be a good approach (and that's before we even get to a comparison of Berkeley routines and the choreography of fascism as lensed by Riefenstahl). |

The row A / AA situation has been confirmed. The official word is that from Monday 24 April, Stalls AA 4 – 20 and A 2 – 22 go up to £75. Seats A 0, 1, 23 and 24 will be £15. Note that 0 and 24 have restricted legroom. That bargain I though I got for £15, in A24 is a leg breaker seat. Me bad!!! |
