Michael Billington gave this 3 stars and Don Juan in Soho 4 stars. I like the Guardian, but seriously??!! Michael Billington gave War Horse 3 stars. He could simply have a mathematical system based on the various aspects that sometimes adds up to odd star ratings rather than giving the show a score out of 5 as a whole, it seems plausible that War Horse might have been let down by its writing. But I just like looking at some of the dross he gives 4 stars to and shouting "BETTER THAN WAR HORSE" to amuse myself. At the end of the day reviews are subjective and relative...to what else they've seen lately, to how they're feeling on the day, to whether Shenton ends up sat next to them.
Some publications/people have a 'system' or 'checklist' for star ratings, others are more 'pick a card any card' so I tend to concentrate on the content of the review rather than the number picked. But also, there's no accounting for taste and nowt as queer as folk so who knows...

Everybody has one
Its never a good idea to take on board any review too seriously, the only viewpoint that should count for any show is your own and whether or not you like what you have seen.
Hahaha- love the spoiler alert!

Admittedly not a critic but Sara Cox on Radio 2 Breakfast Show sang the praises of the Opening night - I lost count of how many times she used the word 'incredible' so that will have reached a few hundred thousand ears - she also played 'we're in the money' & didn't even add at the end 'other shows in the West End are available' ... This is probably better than any 5* reviews. It's now the radar of several million people, many that might never read reviews.

That Guardian rating is shocking. Yes, it does read more like a two-star review. But he very much liked one or two aspects of the show, so decided to be generous when awarding his stars.

I really wish there would be a live cast recording! It has been 16 years since the last one (and it has been on repeat since March 22!) Pretty please?!

Interesting that 'Official London Theatre' have done a mail out, today of all days, declaring An American in Paris 28 x5* review worthy. Basically an AAIP paid advert on the day after 42s officially opens.

That Guardian rating is shocking. He slagged it because it didn’t move him. How did he get to the theatre wearing those old fashioned diving boots? Has he no sense of Rhythm? Did he not notice all the smiles the audience were wearing as they left. The buzz was palpable and there was none of the 'must make haste if I’m to get the 10.58 to Chipping Guildford' you get at the end of most shows. Even a casual observer of audiences would have pick up on the energy and JOY it gave them. If the Guardian wants to create the image that its read by humourless, joyless, bleeding heart liberals, then they need to hire him to do their theatre reviews……Oh hang on a min….

Yes, there's obviously something wrong with him because he didn't like the show. Obviously, if he had loved the show, there would be nothing wrong with him.
I asked a few pages back and met with an attack calling me cynical, but is this show crowdfunded? Why such high feelings about this musical? I will see it and may well love it, but whether I do or don't I'll respect other people's opinions on it.
All of this hype feels extremely contrived though and it's rather off putting!

It's a 3* review, it's not like Billington panned it and many musicals have gotten those sorts of reviews and still successfully running like Wicked and Aladdin.

I am quite enjoying a usually pessimistic vibe being replaced with one of enthusiasm and positivity!

Feel free to be put off - but as far as I can see, the vast majority of opinions on this thread are those of people who have been, and seen, and LOVED this show. You only have to read other threads to see how unusual it is for this forum to have such a universally positive reaction to a show. That's not hype, it's happiness!

I will see it and may well love it, but whether I do or don't I'll respect other people's opinions on it. All of this hype feels extremely contrived though and it's rather off putting! It's a shame that you see a group of passionate theatre-lovers almost universally take a musical to their hearts in a way that, certainly this board, has not frequently seen, and your immediate thoughts are that it could only be because we have either a financial incentive in the show and/or our comments are artificial and deliberately created (really?!?!?!), for what purpose you think I'm not sure. In return for money? Free tickets? Are you actually serious? So many questions... You really find it impossible to believe that this production is just that good?? And that we all think so?? And that, in many of our eyes, it deserved far higher than a 3* rating? If that has, in your eyes, turned into 'hype', then so be it. But it's bloody true. And until you've seen the show, it's really no good trying to explain it you to, as you have made it clear you very much believe none of what we say. I do hope you see the production and love it as much as we all seem to. Though unfortunately, you've already been tainted by your own views of us and are already put off, which I fear will affect your enjoyment of the show. It's a bigger shame that this genuine reaction, and I can assure you that the reaction is 99.9% genuine whether you want to believe it or not, has had such an affect on you that you're actually put off seeing the show, rather than rushing to book tickets based on recommendations from like-minded people! It's a little mind-boggling, too, if I may say. I think your views on our comments, which on this occasion are incorrect, very much 'label' you as cynical. May I ask why you just can't believe it to be true?

It appears to be happening with Hello Dolly in NY at the moment as well (although audience behaviour appears to be quite out of control there from some of the reports I've heard). It's easy enough to look at the state of the world and come up with reasons.

Well that must be the the most embarrassing book of a musical ever!! I'm still reeling at some of the twaddle! Yes amazing tap, amazing costumes but really I would have preferred to sit through an old fashioned variety show with comedians between the tap. Poor Miss Easton is not an actress and makes the book even worse and how Mr Lyster keeps a straight face I'll never know. This is just a recreation of the 1980 broadway show with no real reason behind it. At least it gives work to some talented dancers.
