Quentin Letts 4 stars, says he preferred AAIP by a small margin.

Probably the book is penalizing it and it's not totally wrong. I would hardly say AAIP has a better book Worse maybe Like Dynasty

American In Paris is essentially Gershwin set to ballet, hated it on Broadway, hated it here.
42nd Street is a far superior show, however it didn't get 5 Stars from the mighty Guardian and Daily Mail, which could harm the production.

Whilst the daily mail has a circulation of 1.5 million Metro is 1.4 And ES 800 000 Times and telegraph about half a million Guardian is under 200 000 I think the show has 4/5 stars where it counts Just pending the free papers Which are immensely important as it's what people Read of the way to work

Pretty sure there's a gap/aisle between the end of the row and the wall - just trying to picture whether it runs all the way forward to A. (The Monkey will know!) I think there is some gap It's not aisle though? Fairly sure I walked along the front of Row A and up the 'gap' to the nearby exit at the end of the show, so while not an aisle per se, it is an access to the end of the row. But my memory is so notoriously unreliable, I wouldn't want @djames to rely on it!

The Duchess of Cambridge attending will be good publicity for the show

It's a 5* show to its core in everything but its flimsy book, but for me the book is simply a hanger for the spectacle and is easy to forgive. So, while I can just about understand the 4* reviews as each seems to wedge the book caveat in amongst the lavish praise, the 3* is a complete mystery!
AAIP is a personal 5* too, but if a weak book is reason enough for a range of ratings at 42ndSt, then I'd expect to see the same here... maybe the critics were swayed by ballet and Gershwin into believing it somehow worthier. Or maybe AAIP's advertising spend was higher...

No star rating on the ES review but it's not good... not sure if full review yet posted, but Fiona Mountford's piece in tablet version headlines "values spectacle over story" and ends with "despite the tapping, our spirits begin to flag."
ETA: 3*

Pretty much half of musicals in general value spectacle over story, so clearly that review was written by someone who hasn't got a clue about musical theatre if that's the main criticism...

Reckon it says more about the state of Ms Mountford's spirits than the state of the show!

ETA: 3* Fiona Mountford is by far the worst critic writing about the West End. Everything is either too loud or too much...perhaps she should start reviewing libraries or art galleries.

Having seen it that reinforces my valuing opinions of those on here over critics. Fiona Mountford called the David Baddiel show profound Shame she looks for meaningful depth in musicals Really she is in the wrong profession in this case It cannot be that gratifying writing reviews for a free paper

It cannot be that gratifying writing reviews for a free paper Ouch! We must relax and have joy This CANNOT and WILL not become the BILB thread!! The show has enough good reviews and features and publicity to tempt people and no one has slated the show We have seen over and over again that a parade of 5 stars can be ignored by the paying public anyway There are some rave reviews and these should be enough to pique the interest of people who were undecided on seeing the show We shall see what happens now......

Metro say this has a plot "to make the featherweight American In Paris, playing just up the road, look positively Shakespearean". Ouch!
What will persuade more to go was probably the half page bit and photos above the review saying that the Dutchess of Cambridge was in!
