So the NT are now charging book fees on telephone bookings. When did they start doing this?

So the NT are now charging book fees on telephone bookings. When did they start doing this? When booking opened for the most recent new booking period, a couple of weeks or so ago. The NT website's Help Centre's Frequently Asked Questions page says: "Do you charge a booking fee? There is no booking fee for online bookings or those made in person at the National Theatre; we do, however, invite you to make a donation of 5% of your order value to help support the National Theatre's work. Every penny contributes directly towards our mission to make the very best theatre and share it with as many people as possible. A £2.50 fee per transaction will be charged for all phone bookings except those made by members at Priority level or above and those made by Access List subscribers."

1st April 2016, appropriately. As well as the £2.50, you can stump up an extra quid to have tickets posted to you. I really should get out of the habit of needing my tickets in my hand after I book them. I keep a stash of tickets at home in chronological order and fret a little if a show is in my diary but I don't have tickets for it. But given the NT now has ticket pickup machines, and it's easier to get a refund if I don't have the physical tickets (I always end up posting them in because I forget to take them when I go), I ought to get used to leaving the tix there...

Agreed, those machines are very handy. The only issue I sometimes have with them is when I want to collect my tickets for shows that aren't on the system quite yet - so I still have to queue. But that's a small gripe.

But given the NT now has ticket pickup machines LOVE those machines. You can always tell the "first time user" as they are the ones who jab hopefully at the screen, and NOTHING HAPPENS!!!! The regulars of course know that all you do is swipe your card through the reader at the side, and wait for the results. Have not yet ventured to use one of these as I have witnessed people (presumably first timers) failing to get them to work so thanks for the tip off TheatreMonkey, since the last time I got my ticket from an actual person there they seemed to want my inside leg measurement to hand it over I may well try my luck with a machine next time.

The NT machines churn out all your tickets, even if paid for with different cards, so you can't just collect today's show's tickets.

It sounds like the telephone booking-fee is the equivalent of the donation level suggested to ticket-buyers when purchasing online, though that is optional.

the last time I got my ticket from an actual person there they seemed to want my inside leg measurement to hand it over I may well try my luck with a machine next time. Did you check to see if they'd written their phone number on the back of the tickets, peggs? There may have been a reason for wanting those details?! Now I didn't consider that theatremonkey I just thought that they weren't very keen on letting anyone actually into the auditorium!

I always recommend collecting because I buy cheap seats and if a show isn't selling well you are more likely to get upgraded when you collect and a saucy wink if the Garrick is anything to go by.
