Oliver Thompsett is off sick, Ivan De Freitas who is usually Lord Capulet is covering. I think Cassidy might also have a cold based on how her voice sounded at last nights performance. She was pitch perfect but sounded husky, had a voice break at the start of the show in ‘I want it that way’ and I think she scaled back some of her stuff. Her main song was full pelt though and I’m amazed she got through it - a true pro. Ivan was good as Shakespeare in Oliver’s absence, he has a great voice and a cheeky smile, but I personally prefer Oliver’s performance overall. |

Ade is that you?? A ‘proper’ musical, whatever that may be, is in the eyes and ears of the beholder. There’s all different kinds of people in this world and a market for all different types of performance, thankfully. Who is one person to say what is ‘proper’ and what is not? Each to their own I say. Shoehorning an all.

Comments here about The Boy Friend includes “light as a feather”, “a bit ‘allo ‘allo” “very little plot”, “every one is a caricature”, “not much there” “wafer thin” with actors “chosen for their looks”. It looks gorgeous though, it would seem.
I think Mr Edmondson should try and see &Jukiet in a night off, he might like it more than he thinks!

Oliver Thompsett is off sick, Ivan De Freitas who is usually Lord Capulet is covering. He's since tweeted to say it was bronchitis but is slowly recovering. Meanwhile Melanie La Barrie had just tweeted she's off ill tonight and her understudy (normally Lady Capulet) is on for Nurse |

My Brit friend has been raving to me about this so finally saw it last week! Given her raves I was expecting to be blown away a little more than I was, but I can’t deny I had a great time, and everyone in the show was having a great time too! It’s just high quality fun. Given the familiarity of so many songs I could see it working on Broadway, but I think it’ll need strong marketing and word of mouth. But so many shows now take themselves so seriously, especially on Broadway, there’s definitely a place and need for a show like this!

Yes, so many serious shows on Broadway right now lol: Beetlejuice, Tootsie, Mean Girls, Aladdin, Book of Mormon, Freestyle Love supreme, Moulin Rouge.
What does a person just wanting a brainless night out do?

Haha fair point, but I feel the West End takes itself a little less seriously! Definitely agree with that. I imagine the costs pressures of Broadway might have a bit to do with the difference. |

I think it might be a bit too “knowing” for Broadway. There is definitely a huge element of daft (albeit sophisticated) panto-esque nods to the audience. I’d worry that they would be thinking they were getting some serious thing about R&J or Shakespeare or something. Perhaps I underestimate the Broadway audience. Something Rotten did over a year on Broadway and that was a daft take on Shakespeare and musicals in general. BTW I've just noticed they've quietly extended bookings by two months. |
