but this is a complete restaging not just taking a few set pieces out. I can't think of any that have changed that significantly

They are going to replace the original production with this ‘new’ one. Expect it to be announced soon. I saw it yesterday afternoon in Dublin and thought that it was absolutely brilliant - fresh and visually ravishing. Paule Constable's lighting was sublime and the effects of the tunnel and Javert's demise were clever as hell. The atmosphere was brilliant and the Bord Gais is a very special theatre. Anything I've seen there has been utterly memorable for all the right reasons. |

I respect both productions, but IMO the 'west end' version is the revolve and the staging that goes with it. I'm sure it will still draw in the tourists etc but if this is a ploy for a bit more cash, which wouldn't surprise me, I'd be so disappointed. All I hope in the move is that they recast some roles with actors the same age as the character. Whilst Bradley Jaden is a good Javert he's far too young for the role. |

I can just picture to bad reaction from the industry on Twitter now. If this is happening, Cameron is taking a massive risk. What I don’t understand though is the timeframe. Initially I assumed that the tour would move in to the West End. But the tour is going on for a long time. So does that mean the original will move from the Queen’s to another theatre to then later be replaced by the tour. Or are the just going to push by the Queen’s restoration until the tour ends. Just seems a lot of hassle/complexity in this. |

This is literally the most ridiculous idea I've heard in a while. The tour is incredible and I love it - it has also allowed the show to continue to be presented around the world reaching audiences old and new.
But the London production is the only original version left and it's staging and design iconic. It should continue in harmony with the tour elsewhere.
Would Cameron even have the right to do this, with Napier/Hersey/Nunn/Caird having no say?
Also it would surely lose it's status as longest running musical (it's a completely different production!) which would default to Phantom.
I'm sure it's just a rumour!

I think it's a bold move and I applaud it. With Les Mis and Phantom, they set an unprecidented and unequalled phonomenon of having the same production running for decades.
Is it a great thing, artistically, for productions that are now VERY old to be pickled in aspic and become more like museum pieces.
Surely that is the death of creativity?! (well maybe that's a tad dramatic)
But I think it shakes things up and ends that production on a high, instead of limping on in perpetuity.

Horrible decision, if only because the new production is not as good as the original. It's as simple as that. Audiences deserve to have only the best. Cameron's spiel about the 25th-anniversary productions of Miz and Phantom being new and improved is just marketing guff, both are worse than the originals (Les Mis works still because so much of it was stolen from the Nunn/Caird original, but it pales in comparison to the original version; the restaged Phantom was a mess).

The news of the West End production moving & getting replaced reminded me to get round to checking for tour tickets for Milton Keynes. I'm amazed at few stalls seats there are left: fewer than a dozen for every performance I checked. I didn't expect it to have sold so well given a) it's 4 and a half months away & b) Milton Keynes isn't that far from London so it's not as if the residents can't get to the WE production. The ticket prices seem very high for a tour, with most of the stalls at over £70. Fortunately I spotted a single seat for a Thursday matinee at only £39, advertisted as a slightly restricted view, which I think I can cope with for saving over £30!

Pretty sad if they do that. The legacy of will be devalued in my opinion. No revolve 😢 Removal of the revolve?!? That’s sacrilege. Suggest all theatre lovers gather to build a barricade on Shaftesbury Avenue to protest (!) 😁 |

The other good thing about the tour version is that it’s all on fast forward. Granted, Cosette sounds like a budgie on speed but at least no one misses their last bus home.

Seeing it in Edinburgh this weekend - only heard rave reviews from friends. I've only seen the original - ok 10 times - but looking forward to the new production. I think this might well be my last visit though, I do love it, but how many times can you see the same show?

Well if this is the new staging that London is getting, everyone is in for a treat! I LOVED the new staging, some beautiful moments, well lit, slick as ever, revolve wasn't missed for me. I did notice a few forced/added bits to get props and bodies off etc, but it really is beautiful to watch. The projections are fabulous and I knew there was a change to Javert's death but forgot what I had read until I saw it. It got a round of applause, much better. Sound was crystal clear, orchestra beautiful and powerful.
I have a couple of thoughts on the tour cast though - my own thoughts! Killian doesn't work for me, too small and just not believable - I noticed an annoying tone to his voice as well at certain points. Marius - oh dear. What a wimpy, wet, camp character! Nnoooo! They had all those people audition and chose him? I don't know who was on for Cosette either but she wasn't very strong and strangely looked like she had never played the part before, so weak. The whole cast were a tad young I would say - Katie too, but I do love her voice, she is my favourite ever Christine I have seen and I did enjoy her Fantine too.
A note about the audience behaviour though - so many people went out and in many times for a pee I guess and the centre of the front row were finally thrown out for disrupting everybody - they really were pretty drunk. Well done to the producers/directors, a much-needed freshen up for this fantastic show.

At Dirty Dancing etc I wouldn't be surprised but not Les Mis.... Anyway, glad you enjoyed it so much, it is a wonderful production. I am currently very much looking fwd to seeing it at The Manchesterford Palace. |

Great news but annoying in a number of ways. 1 Just booked (3 hours ago), taking a slot from another potential show, for FOMO. 2 Just booked (3 hours ago) and this article is flogging it as "sold out run" but theres seats dotted around on many performances albeit sparsely. On quite a few performances they seem to have released a row at the back of the stalls. |
