So was this planned to be open ended or planned to be limited run? Semi rhetorical question as I guess nobody other than the producers know. Wonder how long cast were initially contracted for. Anyway, I don't think this is selling nearly as badly as some online prophets of doom are decreeing. Advance seating plans for next few weeks look much healthier than Crazy For You ever did at same theatre! There are also no decent advance offers yet.... It was announced as an “initial 6 month run”. I think it was probably booked with the option to be open ended if advance sales looked strong, but guessing they weren't enough and it was quickly confirmed to be six months. Agreed that this will comfortably make the six months though, there will be empty seats but don't think it's going to be losing money hand over fist every performance like CFY seemed to be near the end of its run. Totally agree! Been watching the seating plans as quite fancy an LWT decent seat dynamic pricing down on the day, but hasn't really kicked in yet (assume as no need....). Front central stalls pretty solidly priced currently! You may do better via TodayTix - I got row G of the centre section on Rush yesterday, and having had a few practice runs in recent weeks, seats in that section have appeared fairly regularly. |

Gillian Lynne was/is aggressively looking for a hit with potential to be a long runner. They want the new Guys and Dolls. Sky's Edge is a great show but it underperformed compared to expectations. One of the Totoro leads told me yesterday that they're transferring to GL (not a scoop, that transfer has been mentioned here before) and GL wants it to run for six months minimum. Though personally I hope Totoro does well in the West End but not so well it runs for years, because I still have hopes that GL will take Tammy Faye back after the Broadway run. |

Yes, I was a bit disappointed when I read about the Tammy Faye Broadway transfer as assumed that’d delay it opening in the West End. Hopefully in 2025?

Thought I'd dip my toes back into offering my thoughts on a show.
I've just got out of this evenings performance, my first time seeing this and I'm not sure if it was trying to be a concert or a play. The handheld mikes/mikes on a stand really took me out of the narrative elements each time they popped up. I also thought the songs were hit and miss - personally I loved the rock songs but wasn't so keen on some of the quieter ballads.
In terms of the narrative, I struggled to connect with it in the first half, then finally got into it in the second half until the problematic conclusion of one of the storylines (that I can see others have already picked up on). Also, having heard some of the rousing numbers earlier in the show, I was disappointed with the final number, which seemed very flat and left me thinking 'is that it.'
I was in the side stalls for £10 thanks to the NT's Friday Rush, which offered a great view 97%v of the time, with just a few moments where characters had their backs to me.

One observation I forgot to add to my previous post is that the theatre was so much busier than when I went to see Crazy for You.

I was at the show this afternoon - understudy Poppy was the only noticeable one, all the other covers were in minor roles.

Saw this tonight.
Absolutely loved it. Doesn’t deserve to end in August. Thought all the cast were outstanding and Rob Hastie’s direction was impeccable. I’d say it was 90% full and received a spontaneous standing ovation.

Does the box office do day seats day of for this production? Don't think so but the NT Friday Rush is £10 and I got tickets 2 hours after they were made available the other week so think you'd be fine that route. |

And there’s never any harm in politely asking and seeing what they say.
I’m sure I’ve seen and heard reports of bargain prices being offered, depending on availability and how busy / slow things are looking that day of course.

Saw this tonight from row D of the stalls for £50 that I had booked a few weeks ago(no £20 seats on offer anywhere near where I was sitting when I looked yesterday, the seats next to mine were £90 so if anything was on offer at £20 it was possibly the seats upstairs and round the back where I doubt you could see which years the action was taking place in).
I’ve appreciated the work of Richard Hawley that he has done with the likes of Pulp and the Manic Street Preachers over the years rather than his own work (I saw him supporting Pulp in Dublin last year), I liked the first act but the second went on for far too long, and thought there was no need for a show like this to go on for three hours : refreshing to see a musical that isn’t just a jukebox for a couple of hours but I didn’t think it was that great.

A very strong production, sublime in so many ways (performances, staging, music), another remarkable NT project!
As it's a different type of musical, I can image that also people who aren't usually into musical theatre might like this one.
Contrary to some remarks above, for me the choreography beautifully matched with the music and atmosphere.

I caught up with this earlier in the week. Having read contrasting reports, I wasn't sure whether it would be my cup of tea. I knew it was about three sets of people in a block of flats in Sheffield, but hadn't twigged that it was the same flat, so it was interesting to see the connections between everyone. I quickly became invested in the characters, and loved the music, especially the rockier numbers, although I have to admit I wasn't struck on some of the choreography. All in all, I really enjoyed it, and have been thinking about it a lot since seeing it, which is always a good thing in my book. A solid 4*.

Tickets for this are quite well discounted at the moment so I watched this for a second time yesterday. I'd had a busy week at work when I saw it for the first time and had been quite distracted when watching, so it was nice to revisit this with a clearer head!
There are a couple of interesting moments of foreshadowing and repetition which I appreciated and only picked up on the second time around. I also really admire the scope of the storytelling - focusing on the same flat over multiple generations is a great premise. The songs are all fine, though I'd hoped they'd grow more on me a bit more on the second listen, and they're performed well by a strong ensemble cast. The clear standout for me both times was Laura Pitt-Pulford and it was her character's story I cared the most about.
Some people around me were talking about having seen it multiple times and I'm aware of some friends of friends who have also seen it multiple times. So this seems to be pretty popular with those who have seen it - just a shame it's closing early.
Oh, and the Standing at the Sky's Edge branded Hendo's relish at the merch stand was a great touch. They either didn't have that when I first saw this or I just missed it. Either way, I've now got a bottle of the stuff in my kitchen cupboards!
