Disappointed that Faith Omole isn't returning, she was so good last time. I’m SO SAD about this. Her performance was my favorite of the entire year and I’ve been hoping I’d get to see her in the role again.

So many not returning. So odd. Especially as they were the bigger roles. Wonder what happened?

A lot of them have been involved for a very long time. Pre Covid up in Sheffield. Brilliant as it is, I think people like moving on.

I'm really sorry but if it's not Maimuna singing Open Up Your Door then you might as well keep the damn door closed. {Spoiler - click to view} That being said, now that she and Faith are free, one of the two should be Eurydice in Hadestown, thanks.

Agree. The moment when she opened her mouth to start singing that blew my doors off. Unforgettable.

2 of the cast were on BBC Beeakfast news. No one seemed sure whether to call it a musical or a play.

Has anybody watched the vid of Lauryn Redding singing Open Up Your Door (whatsonstage site today)? Her Northern accent is very pronounced. I loved Maimuna's version SO much it was always going to be tough for Lauryn to follow that. It's different though, which I guess is good.

That song and performance was the highlight of the show for me, and I’m really sad she’s not returning. People who haven’t seen it before won’t know what they’re missing out on I suppose.

Yes, I went in to it with an open mind, but I must say my heart sank a bit as it's just nothing like as good as Maimuna's version. That was totally jaw dropping in the show. Hopefully Lauryn's version will come across better live. Such a shame Maimuna isn't doing the show again.

It’s much more authentic to Sheffield though

Gutted that Maimuna and Faith won’t be part of the West End transfer. I like Lauryn’s Northern accent whilst singing, but unfortunately I didn't get goosebumps like I did when I first heard Maimuna’s version. I’ll probably try for rush tickets since I would like to see it again though.

There was a raw, gutsy, explosive quality to Maimuna's vocals, with more than a hint of Amy Winehouse in her phrasing that would magnetise you, and have you listen to her from the moment she opened her mouth to sing. I'm afraid all that - judging purely based on this new video - is missing from Lauryn's rendition.
Nice to hear it sung in a more pronounced northern accent, but Lauryn's version is more of an indie, contemporary reading filled with riffs, flips into head voice, cry-infused onsets... and to my ear that started to feel a bit repetitive halfway through the song.

Maimuna sounded like she was singing it in a smoky blues bar somewhere in the Deep South complete with American accent. It was gorgeous yes, but completely wrong for the context.

It doesn't necessarily make a lot of sense for Nikki to have a northern accent, or for her to sound "authentic to Sheffield". She lived with Poppy in London, and one of the few things we know about her background is that she isn't from Sheffield.
I didn't love Ms. Redding's take on the song either. The riffing is just *too much*.

This is a promo video so maybe it won't be the same as she does it on stage. Let's give her a chance before deciding she's no good!

Controversially I think I prefer Lauryn. Maimuna blew the roof off, but I found Lauryn's much more moving emotionally.

I’d still maintain that Maimuna was too jazzy bluesy for a British musical.

I’m slightly worried about this transfer.
Obviously many people liked the show at the National, but so many of that cast are no longer staying with the show for its move across the river, including vital players like Maimuna.
Also, the way the NT are advertising the show with that image of when everything kicks off (which must make up all of 2minutes of the show, if that), making people think it’s an explosive, all guns blazing show, when it’s anything but.
It all just seems very…muddled.

I actually had the same thought today. I guess triggered by watching Lauryn's video. Not that she's bad, she isn't, but the National version wowed me SO much that I'm now a little worried something will be lost with this transfer. I'd like to think given it's the same team (and the show won so many awards therefore has that added pressure/expectation) it will be just as good. I do find it odd how few of the original cast members are transferring. I know they might want to do other projects, but I'd have thought they'd want to get together again and do this incredibly special show. I'm already booked to go, but this was the stand out show of the year for me and I hope the 2024 version is as good as I remember.

Does anyone know what's going on with the front row at the Gillian Lynne? Thought it'd be quite good to go front row, which is currently row B, but it says they 'might' add an extra row?
