Baz had this overnight and its been announced today. Rupert Everett directing himself as Uncle Vanya. Jennifer Saunders in Blithe Spirit. Others no doubt to follow. Apparently RE has always wanted to play Vanya!

Isn't Vanya only meant to be 47?
If you need me I will be by my saucer of milk

Will wait to see what is on concurrently at the Ustinov to see whether it is worth a couple of day trips, not a strong enough draw on their own even though I am quite partial to bit of Chekhov.

I am not at all convinced that Jennifer Saunders and Coward are a good match.

I am not at all convinced that Jennifer Saunders and Coward are a good match. I have these reservations too, it will very much depend on the strength of the supporting cast. Lisa Dillon is an excellent start as Ruth

Wonder when they will announce the other plays? There are usually four mainhouse offerings and two or three in the Ustinov.

learfan wondering the same, usually try to do a two play day when travelling to Bath, holding off booking for now until I know what is on in the Ustinov.

Didn't realise that Janie Dee was in Sonia and Vanya and Masha and Spike, which ends just 6 days before her first performance in Passion. She's keeping herself busy!

She did say she booked in a lot for the period after finishing Follies as she knew it was going to leave such a big hole.

Really enjoyed Uncle Vanya yesterday - all the performances were top notch and it will stay with me. Brisk, too - it came to just over 2 hours including interval. The set is lovely, too, and adds to the overall mood. I heard some mutterings about Clemence Poesy but I felt she had a melancholic quality that I found affecting and genuine. Mikhail was played by an understudy but you wouldn't know it.
I'd booked for Row C which is now the first row and if you're tall, it would be an uncomfortable squash. However being that close to the action was really something. And you could catch one or two moments extra - like Everett being unable to light a match repeatedly and glaring backstage.
Haven't been to theatre here before, it was a real treat to see such a well-mounted play in a nice (stumbling for adjectives) theatre.

Row E for me at matinee yesterday. Thought Parkinson was miscast....hardly a plain mouse that on-one would notice? And didn’t really enjoy Everett either....thought he was miscast too perhaps? I thought set was rather large.....perhaps would have been better with smaller more claustrophobic feel? And somehow I thought the whole direction just didn’t work...not quite sure why....but I have seen much better. Having said that I did feel I had been transported to another world when I emerged from the theatre....felt a bit spaced out as you do sometimes after good theatre, so perhaps I am being a bit harsh! I agree, wouldn’t have known understudy was an understudy...he nailed it! Went for a cup of tea ☕️ afterwards as that always makes everything ok!
