I was surprised to see a fair number of empty seats in the stalls last night - I would guesstimate around 20 - 30. Well, much of the Bridge Theatre's core audience is of an age where booking too far in advance is a bit of a leap of faith. Or maybe 20/30 of them popped their clogs since booking? |

Is she wearing an ear piece? Yes she is. She’s also so enjoying it (against the odds - she was very anxious about remembering it all) that she is in talks to bring it back later in the year. |

Before tonight's posters jump in, I was there last night and she was a complete triumph. The last 15 mins or so are truly electrifying. What she is doing on that stage is so complex and layered - a real tour de force and up there in one of the best performances I've ever seen on stage. If this is the last time she's on stage, then she is going out on a total high (a part of me is thinking that Dench should see this and craft her own balls-to-the-wall stage swan song performance too).
Seats wise, the performance is definitely skewed to stage right/house left/high numbers. I was in low Row B stalls and the only restriction was the table she was sitting it.
Had a bit of a strange encounter with the Bridge box office where I bought one too many of those side stalls £15.00 seats and tried to return it. They said they wouldn't put it back online, and only sell at the box office at 6:30 on the night of the performance once all of the 20 or so £80.00 premium seats had been sold (obviously this didn't happen). Surely if it had gone back on the website it would have snapped up fairly quickly? It just seems to me like everyone loses out; me for not getting my money back, the theatre for having empty seats, and the potential buyer who isn't seeing the performance for £15? I was in the same situation with Betrayal last week, and ATG snapped my hand off for my spare ticket and gave me the refund on the spot!
Anyway, I enjoyed the play so much that I'm going back on Monday! She is too good just to see the once!

I was there on Monday and loved this. Really engaging from the very beginning.
Truly a wonderful night. Maggie Smith was excellent. Look forward to seeing again in a couple of weeks.

MrB, do you know how visible the earpiece is that she's wearing? Is it distracting/external? We will be sat stage-left. Am hoping they've put her hair around her ears or wigged her up like they did with La Lansbury in Blithe. |

Her hair is straight, no nonsense and totally covering both lugholes. Frankly she could have a chocolate eclair stuffed in her ear and you wouldn't notice.

It's a shame there isn't an interval. Sometimes, especially if it's cold, I like to treat myself to a rum from the bar. Very occasionally I'll really push the boat out and order a double rum from the bar bar. 😂
(What's that noise? It's the sound of a barrel being scraped!)

Watched this tonight. An absolutely fantastic performance by DMS. For the first time in a very long time, you could hear a pin drop in a theatre auditorium. No sweet rustling or mobile phones going off, just complete silence as you watched her on stage. For the 100 mins or so, you could tell she was on top of the material tonight (she didn’t take a break to have a sip of water) and brought a lot of energy to the role. For me, it was the subtle things like a hand gesture to help convey a point during the performance that really helped.
It was a privilege to see Dame Maggie Smith on stage, and she is looking great at 84 years old.

Agree 1000% percent with the post above and interesting that he, too, noted the absence of water to chivvy the Dame along. And she is by the way in magnificent voice, even miked: they had voices then, that generation of actor, they really did !

Me three there on Saturday night. I have asked the theatre to mail my socks back once they have got them down off the lighting rig. Also noted that "high numbers" side is the place to be - and considering I didn't pay premium prices, I ended up closer to the stage than anyone in the centre block did, which was rather nice, LOL. Glad to hear this. I have a seat with a high number in Gallery 1. |
