Does anyone know how many numbers Aaron Fox, Ore's character, has? Without being unkind, hopefully not many. He's in quite a few of them and has one of the best numbers in the show, I Miss The Music. Well, it was one of the best numbers... |

Jason, Carley and Ore were on BBC Breakfast this morning, talking about, among other things, malt loaf. I can't imagine that being of much interest to the woman on the Eccles omnibus! The problem I have with Jason Manford is I usually only get one word out of five (even fewer in Scarborough), but when he was singing with an American accent, I understood every word. So that's a positive. 🙂 Does anyone know how many numbers Aaron Fox, Ore's character, has? Without being unkind, hopefully not many. 😕 I particularly liked the promo vt in the studio that was almost half a second out of sync, making it look like Manford was miming, badly. |

Everyone was handed flyers for this when leaving Sunderland Empire the other week. Always a sign sales are slow.
(The flyer that was stapled to collected tickets was On Your Feet!)

This reminds me of last year when I was constantly given my tickets for the Empire in stapled Miss Saigon flyers which I think sold quite poorly in Sunderland. |

Handing out leaflets is just another form of marketing surely - it’s happened to me at many venues. Likewise using leaflets for tickets is a way to use up excess leaflets and save on costs of specific ticket wallets. I’ve seen many shows at Sunderland that have had pretty full houses and think unfortunately the venue suffers from an unjust view from producers and new audiences that Newcastle is “better” just because it is a bigger city and higher regarded than Sunderland. Each to their own but I think the Empire is a lovely venue. Speech over 😊 |

Speech over 😊 Oh it’s a fantastic venue (I am a Sunderland local through and through, I live about 10 minutes from the empire, and have probably seen more shows there than any other theatre), but audiences are often very sparse especially for non-well known shows. And they are terrible at discounting tickets or having any sort of deals compared to Newcastle which do the standbys. It’s not uncommon for Sunderland to close the upper two levels. It’s also double the size of the theatre royal in Newcastle, much too big for the Sunderland audiences really |

Sunderland do occasionally have affordable tickets. Most recently I managed to get stalls for Book of Mormon at their £13 price promise rate which seems to have been rolled out at all the regional ATG venues.

Now that Scarborough is on prime time BBC1, I'm sure sales will pick up...probably...maybe... "Do you want to go and see Curtains, Doreen? It's got him in it...You know...Him off telly..." The first episode of Scarborough was one of the worst things I've had the displeasure of sitting through for ages. I like Manford as a stand up but nothing about this show really entices me to want to spend twenty quid on it. |

Wow.. this show is f**ked. How can they have the ‘cheapest’ seats being £35? They deserve it to flop if they can’t offer any officially prices tickets for less than that.

It all depends on running costs if they can keep this going..
I just fear for all those smaller theatres around the country when it does pan.

As much as anything, it is just so short-sighted not to make tickets affordable to those of more modest means.
As a student, I saw West End shows for £4 and £5 in the gods. It consolidated the theatre-going habit.
Nowadays, even working in the industry I often won't pay the prices being asked because some producers fail to recognize that while there can be a bunch of tickets at £50 or £60 in the regions, there absolutely must be some at £10 or £15, too. On principle, I won't buy the £60 tickets if I see greedy and short-sighted pricing in play. Theatre cannot allow itself to become even more elitist.

Any professional critic wouldn't review a show's first performance. It's a more favourable review than I would have expected having seen the same show myself on Friday evening. If there are no previews I don't think it unfair to review the opening night. It was a sell-out at the Churchill but the audience reaction was fairly muted. Carly Stenson gave the stand-out performance, Jason Manford was okay but better in The Producers and Chitty, and I didn't rate Ore Oduba's singing at all. The staging and choreography are excellent, definitely not low budget. I enjoyed the musical numbers, many of which incidentally have no real link to the storyline such as it is, but as a comedy it's short on laughs and the whodunnit aspect is shoehorned into the last 15 minutes. If Cabaret and Priscilla are struggling on tour then sadly I can't see this fulfilling all the booked dates. Doctor Dolittle started at the same venue almost a year ago and I thought would be hugely successful but it wasn't. I predict this will flop badly. I hope I'm completely wrong again. |
