I'd like to start off by saying I'm sorry if this thread has already been started, I searched for an existing thread but couldn't find anything. This is honestly the best West End show I have ever seen and I was absolutely devastated when it closed. Is there any chance of this show someday returning or was the UK tour the end? Apparently the only reason they closed was due to Gypsy having already booked the theatre, so at least it wasn't due to bad ticket sales!

Like the only reason Guys And Dolls closed was because Funny Girl already had the Savoy booked?
Oh, wait, Guys And Dolls just moved to a different theatre...

Perhaps there were no theatre's available at the time or the only theatre's available were ones that were either too big or too small so instead of waiting they just went on to do the tour?

I was under the impression it had middling to poor ticket sales-not enough to sustain it. But the tour seemed fairly successful and I'm sure it'll have a touring life again one day.
I'm fond of the show too, having seen it originally in NY years back but I don't think it ever had much of a long term West End life ahead of it.

I think it would've done better if it had won a few Olivier's, but sadly it only got 2 nominations and 0 wins!

Have to agree with Michael-I don't think the ticket going public care much for awards, aside from the initial flurry of extra publicity I don't think it has much bearing.
I think DRS had a respectable West End run, got (if I recall) respectable reviews too. It's great that you love it Hamilton Addict (I do too as I say) and I'm sure it'll be back on tour one day as well.

It was embarrassingly empty when I saw it at Leeds Grand despite heavily discounted tickets.

It was dying a death at the Savoy, hence the marketing realignment, endless rounds of offers and deals and eventual closing. Likewise the arrogant two-week tour booking which ended up being reduced to one weeks pretty much everywhere and filling gaps where it could was endlessly comped or reduced and barely attended.

Although it's a very good show- and I loved it on Broadway- it just doesn't manage to capture the public imagination, (which these days is admittedly very limited). The West End run was subsidized for many months by one of the leads who did not wish to have his/ her (well, his) reputation tarnished by appearing in a short-running flop.

It's actually a super show, and I'd love to see it revived one day - particularly if next time I get to sit in on the ladies' chorus auditions... I didn't particularly enjoy this show, but the female ensemble... Alice Fearn, Lizzy Connolly and Selina Hamilton

I wonder who that could be... For what it's worth, I really liked DRS. Went to see it a few times at the Savoy then in Manchester when it went on tour. But it didn't sell well. I thought the cast for the tour were all just as good as the West End, except the star. Without Robert Lindsay it seemed to lose the 'magic' that it used to have. However, I seem to remember quite a few people on the old board hated Lindsay, so I may be in the minority with that view

I think middling ticket sales was likely the main reason, theatre owners don't book in new shows if the current one is doing well.
Didn't Rufus Hound leave early because he just couldn't work with Robert Lindsay,

Didn't Rufus Hound leave early because he just couldn't work with Robert Lindsay, Certainly did. Lindsay used to really labour and 'enjoy' the scene where Hound was in a wheelchair and used to be way too physical as a way of getting back at him for getting bigger laughs.

Frankly, I'm pretty happy with the quality of pulchritude in MHP and with my front stalls seat. No need for an upgrade.

Is that what he did? I wondered why he left early.

I saw that amateur company perform 42nd Street and I think it's fair to say I wouldn't be rushing to a production of there's again any time soon! An amateur company or not, they were charging professional prices! I saw the tour, but was really disappointed with Michael Praed and Geraldine Fitzgerald. As Comporhys said, it didn't have the same spark as the West End. Was that ever confirmed about the whole Rufus Hound leaving because of Robert Lindsay? I didn't really mind anyway as I thought Alex Gaumond was better!

I saw it pre and post west end and loved it. Very funny, stylish production and nice tunes.

Is that what he did? I wondered why he left early. Oh, the hatred between them was quite something. Didn't speak to each other at all backstage, would purposely avoid each other and towards the end of Rufus' run in the show, they'd take holiday off from the show to avoid having to perform with each other. In the end, they were told by producers that either they get along or something will be done. Alex Gaumond replaced Rufus.
