Actually glad this is being revived, after the debacle at Chichester last year. Cannot think of another Noël Coward play that should be revived apart from Blithe Spirit maybe, out of his major plays. Loads of his obscure plays I haven’t seen and I may not of seen them for one obvious reason.

In 30 years of theatre-going I've never managed to see this; none of the times it's been revived has it received good enough reviews or had an appealing enough cast to persuade me to go. This might be the time to see it: Warchus directs comedy brilliantly.

I've weirdly never seen this, can't quite work out how I missed the National's last go at it.
Anyway will be nice to see Andrew Scott having some fun with a role for once.
And Blithe Spirit with Jennifer Saunders, well she's no Angela Lansbury but definitely worth a watch even if I have seen that play way too many times. She has to be better than Alison Steadman in the role anyway.

This one can't actually be as omnipresent as people are complaining it is, I've never seen it and it is absolutely the kind of thing I would have seen entirely by accident if not on purpose. Has it even been in London since 2007, twelve years ago? Sure, there have been productions in Bath and Chichester since then, but they're not exactly close to London...

I've never seen it as far as I can remember, and I can't find any mention of a London production since 2007. I presume both the Bath production (with Sam West) and the (widely panned) Chichester one might have been intended for London transfers, but neither happened. |

The Bath production with Samuel West may not have made it to London but it did tour because I saw it at my local theatre (Cambridge) in July 2016. Previously, in 2010, there was another tour with Robert Bathurst.

I remember the 2007 one because I think I used to walk past it...but never saw it. Likewise I remember the Sam West Bath one but presumably decided it wasn’t worth the trek over the bridge for. But this is exactly the sort of thing I too would be all over had it fallen properly in my path since, and I’ve never seen it either. And that Andrew Scott is a pleasant little chap so I’ll give it a go I reckon. Also yes Baz’s hashtags like his photography are a thing better ignored. |

I love Present Laughter and was sorry to have missed both the Chichester and Robert Bathhurst tour. They might not have been good productions ( the notices weren't great) but the play is durable and even in lesser productions has rewards. If you go to YouTube you can see the Donald Sinden /Gwen Watford/ Dinah Sheridan version from the 1980's, or the recent Broadway revival with Kevin Kline ( for which he won a Tony) is available through Broadway HD. But my favorite one is the National Theatre Howard Davies production staring Alex Jennings. Mr Davies and Co. found something deeper in the play that other productions ignored in favor of easier laughs. The play became about the family that we make for ourselves in our adult lives and the production was surprisingly moving. I hope Mr Warchus and Mr Scott find similar emotional gold in Coward's play.

I knew I'd seen this play and usually have a pretty good memory for at least something from all the productions I've seen but I had to check my records to find it was the Bathurst/Belinda Lang tour and am ashamed to say I don't recall anything. I like Scott so may well try to catch this.

The Old Vic's marketing strategy is abysmal. They can't even capitalise on a Thursday night / Friday Baz announcement to generate buzz.
Look at their awful website.
Look at the non existent artwork / graphics for their shows.
Why they don't sort it out is beyond me.
