She couldn't be less like Millie M. --- she doesn't do musicals, doesn't have a husky voice, and looks entirely different. Other than that, they are a perfect match.

The play is only about 75 mins long apparently. Generally put on as a double bill with something else.

Very good news. Eyre/Wilton an excellent combo. I wonder if they'll put anything else on with it. Originally done with something called Wrecked Eggs in the mid-80s.

I wondered about that, going to be a v short evening if they dont find something to pair it with. Which means longer for dinner of course. What do we think would be a good pairing? A Question of Attribution by Alan Bennett (the one about Blunt) would be a good pairing in art history is at issue; that was originally part of a double bill too. Perhaps the film of that is so good that a new stage version might seem otiose. Any other suggestions? I do like the idea of reviving (I was going to say 'recent') classics - I think what I mean is plays that were on just before I started going to the theatre and haven't yet had a major London revival. I'd love to see them put on Pravda. I'd love to see Stoppard's Night and Day, Churchill's Serious Money, Hampton's Savages (though that is a long time before I was going to the theatre).

Night and Day has been on my list for ages, it had a good run in the WE and went to Broadway so surely its worth another look? Pravda had a revival at Chichester about 12 years ago with Roget Allam that i missed. Is there another Hare short play that would go well? I mean other than that Eggs thingy.

Austerity has hit the Menier Chocolate Factory. They are taking advantage of the current obsession with very short plays sans intervals to put on the Bay at Nice, which is almost always on a bill with another play. Not worth it.

Well i for one dont mind admitting I've booked for the cast! I like Hare though dont know this play. Yes it would have been nice to have paired it with something but there it is.

Minimum £35 ticket price in an off-West End theatre for a 75 minute play is a bit steep, no? Plenty of availability by the looks of things

Saw this today. Surprised at the amount of empty seats given the cast and venue. Quite a nice little curio. From the audience reaction pretty much everyone was there to see Ms Wilton and she is imperious.

I was also there this afternoon. Not a play person but I quite enjoyed it and at 75mins I didn't get bored. Penelope Wilson was rather good. There were a few empty seats but I wouldn't say more than 15. Musicals always fair better at the Menier than plays anyway.

Watched this at today’s matinee as my final show of my London weekend. After the horrendous Top Girls at the NT last night, I was hoping for a better play today. Despite disliking David Hare’s latest offering at the NT in “I’m not running”, the attraction of seeing one of his earlier plays with Penelope Wilton was an opportunity not to be missed.
For 75mins, it zipped along very nicely and I thoroughly enjoyed this and Penelope Wilton was absolutely fantastic in her role. The other cast members gave very strong performances. Ophelia Lovibond as the daughter was particularly good and her interaction with PW I felt really worked as a mother/daughter combination.
It’s a shame that there where a number of empty seats at today’s show.

Even a preview booked yonks in advance is very steep Well that and I haven't visited since Barnum, I'm too traumatised

Despite disliking David Hare’s latest offering at the NT in “I’m not running”, the attraction of seeing one of his earlier plays with Penelope Wilton was an opportunity not to be missed. For 75mins, it zipped along very nicely and I thoroughly enjoyed this and Penelope Wilton was absolutely fantastic in her role. The other cast members gave very strong performances. Ophelia Lovibond as the daughter was particularly good and her interaction with PW I felt really worked as a mother/daughter combination. It’s a shame that there where a number of empty seats at today’s show. If they cant fill what is a small theatre with a short play by a well known writer with a fairly big star, then i worry. The Menier cant rely on Musicals which only account for about one in four of its productions.

At today’s show, I was probably one of the youngest there (39).
