Starring Michael Pennington, currently at the Royal and Derngate before touring.
Odd, 20th century production (looks like a sort of tattered Downton) but it mostly works. It feels like a production that takes risks, which is what I like to see in Shakespeare. There's a choice made with Regan's character which is potentially really interesting but not pushed far enough.
The acting is amazing across the board. I've only seen Pennington live once before, playing John of Gaunt in the RSC Richard II and that was incredible. This was off the charts.
The blinding scene is very gruesome!

Looking forward to seeing this in Malvern - one of three Lears for us this year. I so agree with your comment about Pennington as John of Gaunt - that was an astonishing performance, so this really sounds like something special
