Just to counter some of the recent negativity in this thread - I went to this last night as a group of 4, and all of us are HUGE fans of the film. We all LOVED LOVED LOVED it! Everything was just so much fun! One of the best nights I've had at the theatre in ages. All of our favourite songs translated perfectly onto stage, and the new additions worked so well. Backstage Romance was definitely a highlight - I'd pay to just see that one number again! The sets, costumes and choreography were stunning. I went in with high expectations and they were all completely exceeded. I can't wait to go back again! I couldn't agree more, as mentioned earlier in this thread, I loved it too Word of mouth across all my friends social media channels, who've being seeing it at separate sittings, is extremely, extremely positive |

I suppose that when the aim seems to be to thrust as much booze as possible down punters’ necks, and with many people clearly only too happy to oblige, it was always going to end messily. Tonight, a woman about three seats along from me violently threw up all over the floor during the show (perhaps it was a sympathy puke during Christian’s absinthe meltdown?). And judging by the state of some of the other audience members, who had clearly been knocking back large quantities of booze, I suspect she probably wasn’t the only one parking a tiger on the Piccadilly Theatre’s carpet. I suppose that’s what happens when you sell seats that come with six glasses of champagne per person (though checking the ATG website just now, it looks like they may have changed the offending “Blue Elephant” ticket package, as it no longer seems to mention six glasses of champers…). Anyway, it all sort of added to the general spectacle, though it’s the poor cleaners I feel sorry for.
As for the show, it was a laugh - it’s not one I’m familiar with, and I’ve never seen the movie, though I have been to the real Moulin Rouge a couple of times.
It’s a little bit of an odd musical IMHO: a few insanely and wonderfully over the top set-pieces sprinkled among some longer, relatively (for this type of show) simple, straightforward scenes. My favourite bit was the end of the first half when they wheel out the Eiffel Tower.
One really good thing about this show is that they’ve whacked up the volume. I hate it when musicals are too quiet…

I am very glad that I have no interest in seeing this show. I have emetophobia & if someone threw up a few seats away from me I'd be fleeing the theatre while having a panic attack.

My friend went to the Speakmans for fear of vomit and vomiting (herself) and is now cured. They do road show type events where they help as many people as they can. I’d be too busy laughing at their ‘enhanced’ faces to be cured but it works for some. |

My friend went to the Speakmans for fear of vomit and vomiting (herself) and is now cured. They do road show type events where they help as many people as they can. I’d be too busy laughing at their ‘enhanced’ faces to be cured but it works for some. I was referred for CBT on the NHS a few years ago but during the course of therapy I was diagnosed with Asperger's & told that therefore the CBT wouldn't work so it was cancelled. I therefore very much doubt a therapy road show would be any help to me, even if it helps mentally normal people. |

Due to Covid in the household I need to change my tickets for this week, but later in the run the seats I bought months ago now seem to be considerably more expensive. Do they honour seat category or just exchange to something of the same price?

It's the house-left end of row seat, beyond the 'wall' which runs behind the cabaret table seats, so nothing whatsoever to impede your view and all the leg room you could wish for, and it's priced at £75. I may have shot myself in the foot by sharing the information, but it allowed me to make a last-minute booking to see the show (third time lucky) on Saturday evening, so I feel I should spread the luck!

Yes, when I went last week, I was in stalls B21. That is a very good seat, but I was nevertheless a little envious of my neighbour in B22 because, as you say, there's no 'wall' in front of that seat and there's loads of legroom. £75 is a good price for that seat IMHO.

I loved this from start to finish. I can see it might feel a bit style over substance for some, and it’s certainly not subtle, but then neither was the film - it was always about spectacle and overblown emotions, and I think that’s what those who love it (me included) love about it.
It may be shallow of me, - and don’t get me wrong, I love a small intimate production with subtle, detailed acting and a plain set as much as the next person - but man, it’s fun to see something so expensive-looking, with lots of people onstage, changing costumes every few seconds, sets flying in and out from all directions, then revolving for the hell of it. I counted at least 3 different lighting rigs that descended and all within the first 20min.
If I was nitpicking, Jamie Bogyo’s voice is beautiful and supple but without heft, and perhaps after the extraordinarily OTT opening half hour it’s hard for anything to truly top it (although the Act 2 opening and the finale do their very best and perhaps succeed), but anyway I was completely sold, as were the friends I was with.

That's exactly what's putting me off, it sounds such a disappointment after waiting 20 years for that story to come to life. Fancy sets and costumes will impress me for maybe 10 minutes, I'm not paying £100 for that if there's nothing behind it. I'll leave the hen parties to it! |

Three stars from The Guardian (one of their critics gave four to the Australian premiere one month ago), which was particularly unimpressed with the "new" songs. Very positive about Jason Pennycooke but not even a word on Clive Carter, which is bizarre since it was considered the award-deserving role on Broadway from moment one www.theguardian.com/stage/2022/jan/20/moulin-rouge-the-musical-review |

They really should have star ratings for different aspects of a musical. One overall star ratings are often so misleading (even if one can understand if the whole review is read). Times calls it a "only a cynically manipulative playlist", and still gives 3 stars.
