Anyone going to this? (NT email just reminded me) at the Shed, 'documentary theatre'. I know someone who was interviewed for it so going on the first night.
I don't recall seeing anything by either writer or director previously but interested to see what they've come up with.

Yep, I'm going; interesting subject and also a chance to say goodbye to the Shed/Temp Theatre - think it will be the last thing I see there.

To my shame I've never been in the Shed! So a good excuse to before it goes.

I think it's a really great space plonked in an annoying location!

Anyone seen this and have any thoughts? Saw it last night and wasn't massively impressed - content-wise, I didn't find it enlightening as it's not saying anything that hasn't been said a thousand times before, and it didn't manage to say it in a new or more relatable way. Acting was mixed, which was maybe due to the verbatim approach - sometimes replicating real people exactly is actually less convincing than letting a good actor do their job. Basically it was people standing around giving disjointed speeches, and it all felt a bit wooden and unconvincing. Some of the people were pretty random as well - I suspect they were hoping to get better subjects to talk to them when they came up with the idea.
In, as they say, my humble opinion.

What would you expect Gillian Slovo is a rubbish writer Preachy and patronising

I didn't see it, due (in a long story) to the person I know who was 'in' it (as in was interviewed) being, what I believe you call a 'creepy bastard' so I stayed the other side of London. I have however, due to being annoyed with him read every review and it doesn't sound like I missed much. But then my humble opinion is now more than a bit biased

Michael Billington gave it 4 stars and said it was informative - so quite the opposite of views here.

Perhaps you should direct this question to Michael Billington rather than me, since I was merely citing his review. However, I thought he was making a genuine and worthwhile point, about "the reasons for the radicalisation of young muslims" and that for those who knew little or nothing of this issue, the play would provide some illuminating background and context.

Right to clarify on the play front: I'm sure it is very informative and interesting, particularly for those with little knowledge about the issues (and those who do in fact) but what I'd heard/inferred was that as a play/performance it wasn't that interesting. But hey I could be wrong, and I'm glad theatre is being used in this way/to address such topics. Right gossip of course it was one of the academics. I don't know if they use his real name in the play, and in case he googles himself I won't say it but Tim Woodward plays him. As well as being a bit (in my interpretation) creepy, he recently also tried to take credit for my own PhD. As being interviewed for a verbatim theatre show apparently makes one an expert on theatre. Ooh thanks for the Friday morning rant Abby
