It looked like Calum Finlay had a few words on the palm of his right hand, don’t know if there were some notes. I think that's part of the play no? He did that when I saw it too but it was at a point when Edward says something to flatter Pat and it seemed to me that it was part of the script that he checked a note on his hand and read it from his hand. |

That makes sense. I did think it was rather too obvious, even from the distant Circle. |

There's (misplaced) faith... ER, yes, at one time they were part of a group that was broken up and one part of which evolved into ATG. Can't remember the specifics, though. And it was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Just done some digging on this  The company was originally formed by Panter and Squire and called "Blandhold Ltd" (which I suspect was an off-the-shelf company name) then changed in 1992 to "Duke of York's Theatre (Holdings)" when they bought their first theatre in London. in 1996 they changed the name again to "The Ambassadors Theatre Group" when they bought the Ambassador's Theatre. They sold the Ambassador's to Stephen Waley-Cohen in 2007 but kept the name of the group. Panter and Squire left ATG a few years ago and now run Trafalgar Entertainment Group. |

Saw this a couple of weeks ago and thought I would weigh in with some belated thoughts. Although the play is fairly insubstantial and breaks no new ground I think it did a good job as a character study of someone I knew a limited amount about (or possibly have forgotten what I did know) It certainly piqued my curiosity and led to me reading round about Highsmith and her times and contemporaries.
I loved Phyllis Logan but was most impressed with Calum Finlay who I initially thought was out of his depth before realising that it was a wonderfully shaded performance he was giving. It's also extremely funny at times if you like your humour scabrous.
I don't know how to do spoilers just yet but will say in reference to the mention of the set upthread that I felt it was in keeping with the theme of the play
I'd say its worth 90 minutes of your time to see this.

After getting a great row D stalls seat deal thanks to @theatremonkey ., overall I was really glad I took a punt on this. A really dark physicolgical play to enjoy on a dark winters afternoon. For me, Phyllis Logan and Calum Finlay gave two really enjoyable performances over the 90 minutes.
I must admit it was a bit weird seeing Phyllis Logan effing and blinding after seeing her as Mrs Hughes in Downton Abbey, but she delivered the lines so brilliantly with such bitterness and anger and with plenty of dark humour thrown in for good measure,though it’s Calum Finlay’s character arc over the play that is the standout for me. What he does with the character is a joy to watch paricularly up close.
It’s a shame the stalls where not even half full. If you where thinking of watching it, I think getting a good deal wouldn’t be an issue at all. The only downside being so close is that you get the full stench of the herbal cigs smoked on stage for the entire play.
Definitely worth a watch in my opinion,

Excited to watch tonight since hearing good things. Just picked up my ticket and thrilled to be front row of the Circle (I booked via a site where you don't find out until you get there where you're sat!). It looks like a great view! |

Add me to the "not exceptional but doesn't deserve the mauling it got from the press" if this was a better play than Logan (uncanny as Highsmith) would probably be up for a ton of awards but this is really about Calum Finlay's Edward getting into the heart of what made Highsmith who she was. This is a break out performance and I look forward to seeing him in more things. Critical disclaim aside I can see why this isn't selling; two hander about Americans from an unknown writer. A production it is lucky to have this opportunity and I think some London audiences would say the same.
I did hate the set though, the purpose of why it is so shoddy becomes clear but The Ambassadors really isn't fit for purpose and calibre of shows you would expect in the West End.

I went the other night and really enjoyed it. Slower burner but very worth it.
Did the cardboard cutout statues symbolise anything ?

Isn't back row of the Ambassadors pretty awful though? I can imagine you'll only get to see La Logan's feet. Possibly a knee. Unless you're into podophilia I guess in which case, they're probably premium seats.

When I saw it (god help me) and had booked a cheap seat the box office lady literally asked me to pick which seat I wanted to upgrade to.
