I hope it does well too. I gather Joanna Riding is transferring with the show, so I'm sold!

I think this has the opportunity to be the next British musical to do well (hopefully!). The most recent British Musicals haven't done that well runs, ie Made in Dagenham and Mrs Henderson so it'll be nice to see a brand new British show do well.
I think the Phoenix is a lovely theatre for this show too. It's got a great story and should be a fun show to visit!

Then I guess you'll have to wait for a successful British musical until my show comes out. Although I'm not British myself but one of my collaborators is, and the show has a British story and we intend to put it on in the UK, so lets say that makes it kind of British

What's the show your intending to put on about then?

What's the show your intending to put on about then? I'm a lyricist/book writer. The show is about people having to make the most of their lives during the Second World War. There's a lot more to it, but I can't go into detail too much, because anyone can read this and I wouldn't want someone to steal our concept.

Saw this already A the music is bad B we all know the story C the play has been performed to death D the book and design isn't great E it's just not the best show F it won't be the next long runner. Will do a year max if that. Sorry.... I wish I could be more positive!

I hope for its success, as I am rather intrigued by the show (I haven't yet seen it).
That being said, from an outside perspective, as I have said before, I really do think the play will be the biggest hindrance for this show. Especially as when it first came out it ran for a while, it toured etc.

Yeah the story is well known but it is also well loved and there's never been a musical before so it's not like it's anything we've seen before. I'm sure it will attract lots of Barlow fans but people (like me) will go for the loved story. The Phoenix isn't too big so I think this should do well. I'm interested to see who's been cast!!

They're adding loads more stuff and changing lots for when this comes to London. Looks like a more advanced set too.

In reponse to your comment George on this being something we "haven't seen before",
I think it will have a Made in Dagenham type of run/feel as said before. Again, a British film, ensemble cast etc. From what I have seen of it, whilst we haven't seen this particular story as a musical, it doesn't appear to be anything particularly new or revolutionary in the world of musical theatre. I almost am hoping I am proven wrong, especially as the Phoenix is a lovely theatre and deserves to have a long runner following the somewhat uneasy two years since Once closed at said theatre. The upside is, it is a theatre that is a great size. So if a show works, it can do well there because it is not tiny but it is not too big to worry about closing early. That is how Blood Brothers lasted so long, and even Once. It must be very difficult to not have much success with a show at the Phoenix though, as it is a smaller theatre so not being able to have a show run there long is slightly embarrassing/sad.

Yes, we know the story. But we also know that we know the story. I don't feel that's enough reason to hate on this show before it opens in the WE. We also know the story for Phantom.

I completely agree, I won't be hating on it at all, until I see the show I am reserving judgment on the show itself. I am just speaking on behalf of what we have at the moment: what the show sounds like on paper and what is being promoted to the general public.

It's not about if we know it or not - it's just a bad musical end of story! Having seen both - it's much much better as a play. Gary Barlow should stay away from musicals, his writing is childish, cheap, simple, unsophisticated, cheesy, easy chord patterns and simply not good enough. Sorry guys... I do hope it's a success, but Groundhog Day it ain't!

We also know the Easter story but people still go and watch JCS. Not because they want to see if it 'has a different ending and he doesn't die in the end' but because audiences like it. Extreme example I know, but you get the idea.

Saw this in Leeds before Christmas. I thought there was still a great deal of work left to do before this show stands a chance at a successful West End run. Thought the music was bland, the set cumbersome, certain elements of the story completely surplus to requirements, notably the children and husband sub-plots. At the interval I thought this doesn't stand a hope of transferring, but the sequence when they are taking the photos is pure joy.

George when you saw it, what was your impression of it that made you fall in love with it so much? It must of had a real impact on you to make you feel it is this strongly destined for success!

But of course we all have our own opinions. I haven't seen the show yet, but the two songs I heard so far were quite good in my opinion.

I love the Phoenix Theatre. As you said, it's the perfect size for new promising home grown shows.

I agree with regards to Barlow's writing, particularly on Finding Neverland, which I found to be a really underrated score. Especially the title song, All That Matters and the Play Scene/Neverland (Reprise).

Bend it Like Beckham is a well known story about the taboo of women playing football in the Sikh community, so this should of appealed to the mass and a particular demographic who don't really go to the theatre, despite there being a bigger fanboy on here than George, who didn't waste any time telling us how good it was, even though contradicting themselves and saying it was crap at the end of previews and changing their mind, when it got good press and look what happened to that one!
