I love Anna Jane Casey, but I don't think even her presence could get me to watch a show that has Denise Welch and Fern Britton in it...

Is Fern Briton playing the disapproving one who pops on stage occasionally to look disapproving? Shouldn’t be too much of a stretch if so. Briton, Welsh and Gladys Pugh will be the names selling this. Anna Jane Casey is great but the people this is being targeted at won’t know how she is.

Well it would be the much missed Rebecca Storm who’d get me there (should I choose to take myself there in the first place). Her and Casey can more than make up for shortcomings elsewhere.

Well I fully expected to see Sue Pollard amomgst that lot, as she was watching it next to me the night I saw it and thought she might be sussing it out for a potential role. Su Pollard would be fab in this! |

Fern might be considered stunt casting, all the rest are well known stage or screen actresses and a lot have excellent Musical Theatre pedigree. Ruth I'm sure was in one of the Calendar Girls casts but as a different role as she was younger then.

Think a good mix of casting. Two strong vocalists for the 2 main parts in Anna Jane Casey and Rebecca Storm and a good mix of names for the other roles.Great to see Rebecca back in a starring role.

Ruth Madoc has a long connection to musical theatre She toured in The Wedding Singer just last year. If nothing else, you have to admire someone in their mid-70s signing up for a 60 week schlep around all four corners of the Britsh Isles. |

Im surprised how little lack of diversity. I know it might not be a huge issue and the target audience will mainly be white but with 6 leading female roles there could’ve been some diversity to show how all women of different ages, race and shape could come together. Someone like Sharon D Clarke or Sandra Marvin

I wouldn’t find a problem if they cast a black actress in one of the roles but I don’t think it’s a big issue that they are all white. The ensemble on the other hand could do with being more diverse so it will be interesting to see that announcement whenever it happens. |

I totally understand what you mean too but I feel like it wouldn’t be an issue say if a black actress played one of the ladies. It would show the WI to look better and also maybe encourage more ethnic diversities to join their local WI. There’s just some good black actresses who could play a woman in this and this is one of the few shows with 6 women at the helm so it would’ve been nice to have seen some diversity. Not sure the ensemble will have any because the ensemble is basically family members. The London cast didn’t get outrage like half a sixpence |

Ruth is 75 years old this year, so must be in good knick if she is undertaking these long tours. I know she has "retired" from pantos as I was at a post show function a couple of years ago after a show she'd been in and she was chatting to a couple of us and someone asked if she was doing panto that year and she said she'd done her last a couple of year's earlier as they were hard work for someone in their 70's and she liked Xmas with her grandchildren now.
Can anyone else remember Rebecca Storm's hit "The Show" the theme from Connie TV series.

I would hazard a guess that until people see non-white people in roles that aren't about their race etc as a matter of course they will always be seen as the "token black, Asian, gay, disabled etc" person. |

They went for an ex Hi-de-Hi cast member, just not that one  I suppose we should be grateful they didn't cast Jeffrey Holland to do his panto dame act  |

Yes, just before she started making 'Hi-De-Hi', Ruth was appearing regularly with the Aba Daba Music Hall Company at the Pindar of Wakefield at King's Cross and a brilliant performer she was too in both comedy numbers and straight ones. Our favourite song was 'Ten Cents a Dance' which Ruth really made her own with a big interpretation of the put-upon cheap dance hall hostess, while I provided all the raucous trumpets and saxophones on the piano! I thought she was great in 'The Wedding Singer' and I am sure she will be a major asset to 'Calendar Girls'. Go, Ruthie! |

Ruth Madoc was excellent (along with Harry Secombe, Roy Castle, David Cardy etc etc) in the tour of Chichester's Pickwick more than 20 years ago!
