Hmm Im in London middle of this week. Do I see this whilst Im there or wait for it to come close on an local run. Purely if you want to see a great cast, I'd say go now. Especially as you can score a bargain at TKTS or with upgrades. |

I am surprised it did not find an audience. I did not like the show but then I thought being male I simply was not the target market. When I saw the show early in the run the 95% female audience (of a certain age) lapped it up.
I think it will struggle on tour too, quite honestly. The play Calendar Girls toured extensively and (as it proved in the WE) the subject has been done to death. No pun intended.
The WE cast are excellent but they will certainly need "names" on the tour. Although getting "names" to tour is exceeding difficult! You can't see Amanda Holden schlepping around the provinces!

I agree with comments with marketing etc.
They needed to get more than Gary Barlow fans in.
The same will happen with The Band I expect.

It wasn't a success because it does not appeal to those who most attend London theatre, families, rich OAP or the gays.
I thought it was good, but not worth a repeat viewing.

Families certainly keep the family musicals afloat - Matilda, Aladdin etc. but I do think that predominantly women buy theatre tickets (and drag their husbands along sometimes) and I thought this would appeal to that demographic. |

No singing involved and she isn't a bad actrsss so could play that part very well. She's already done the play version too. Can see someone like Lesley Joseph as Jessie and Denise Van Outrn as Celia? Still hoping for Sharon D Clarke for Ruth too! |

They are also actors so obviously like performing. Why on earth would you turn down the chance to star on the West End? You are getting paid to do what you love. It would make no sense to turn down work unless you have other commitments or other stuff lined up. This also would allow them to be seen by casting directors and open up more doors. I doubt you would turn down the chance to appear in Londons Wesr End! |

Perhaps you should review your post, @tomj. It's that attitude "Why would they turn down work" That has lead to a parade of awful shows in the first place Mainly musicals Which have failed to run 12 months Which we knew would never be a success from before they even opened Have had to paper and discount Despite positive press reviews Practically sycophantic in some cases And marketing/ appearing on TV shows to plug themselves Half empty at best Because NO ONE wants to see the show to start with If they are happy limping from one flop to the next Amazing for them But when people fail to turn up and the show makes a loss It can't be that rewarding from them Depends how desperate they are for work and how low they are prepared to drop their standards to appear in these awful shows As I said Not all actors grab the first thing they are offered Regardless of its quality If you want me to lie or pretend somehow in order to further massage the egos and fuel the greed of producers who are already deluded and out of touch I won't do it! |
