Well, the reviewers must have been the most patriotic critics in London. I saw it last night and wasn't a fan. It's alright I guess, but terribly inconsistent: there's one or maybe two good songs, but it's not like the book is a triumph of craft that compensates for the forgettable score. The scene when they make the calendar is very funny, but it comes after 2 hours of cliches. The cast is lovely, all the ladies are great and I'm glad each of them had a moment to shine (the Christmas song was my favourite). I saw the understudy in the role of Danny and he was lovely, but Ben Hunter must be a genius to have been nominated for that role.

Saw the matinee (u/s Danny was on as well) today. For the first 20 minutes or so I thought about leaving at the interval, but it got better and I'm glad I stayed for the photo shoot. Good cast, but even they can't save this show. Lots of discounts and quite a few empty seats.

Seeing the show tonight, got a £20 discount on an Upper Circle ticket so couldn't really complain. Am actually looking forward to it alot, it is the last show for me to see out of the major musicals nominated at this years Olivier Awards and, despite somewhat split opinion here, I am looking forward to seeing it and making a judgement of my own.

That is pretty poor getting deals like that for a Saturday evening. Thought this had a good advance and was selling out at weekends

It will indeed. Mainly because it will make you wonder just what Victoria Wood would have done with the score.

So much cheaper
Roman Tragedies I paid £30
£5 per hour

You're right on that. There needs to be natural wastage as it were to keep theatre alive but I would never want a show to completely fail. A failure equals people less willing to put money in again and that's bad for theatre as a whole

I don't recall anyone being "shouted down" - there have been those on here who were hoping it would sell badly and making predictions on the show closing early, despite never seeing it, instead choosing to jump on a bandwagon.

Someone definitely said to me that I wanted it to fail even though I hadn't bothered to see it even though it was in response to a post after I had seen it. Not told you so at all. Just expressing surprise. Seems to me there's been a lot of folk on here overly positive and defensive of this particular show and then a number overly negative. The reality I dare say is somewhere in between. Or am I still not allowed an opinion?

Nobody's saying not have your own opinion, there's no need to twist it like that. From my point of view it seems unnecessary to bring up old disagreements on here for the sake of trying to prove a point.

From my point of view it seems unnecessary to bring up old disagreements on here for the sake of trying to prove a point. Not what I was trying to do so its you who's twisting it. I'm genuinely interested in the mechanics and nobody has ever answered the question when I've asked it. People have said here this has a good advance. Assuming that is true, no reason to assume otherwise, why does that not translate to full houses? Its not as if its a long booking period so is it that it's cheap to run thus it doesn't need full houses for the advance to be good? Is it making money with the sales it has? Genuine questions yet it's been perceived and not just by you as a dig at the show.

Ok, to start, the Upper is about 95% full, but I would imagine some would be discounted, like mine was. It's good. Its not great, but its good. I have only laughed about three times and only the opening song, the Christmas song and the Act I finale song have been great, but the cast are really good. Joanna is fantastic, Claire is brilliant too. Sophie Louise-Dann is doing what she did in Bend It, lurk in the background but she is good. Understudy for Ben Hunter's role who is good, but that role is no where near deserving of an Olivier Award, even the friend role would of been better! I did shed a tear though for the moment with Joanna's husband, when he goes up the hill, I thought that was beautifully done. Àudience are loving it though.

Pleased you're enjoying it. Its got heart and a talented cast. I agree, the cast overall are fantastic, and it definately has that emotional kick. There is something that isn't sitting right for me personally, but I am enjoying it.

Many many seats available American in Paris is not far off either I would have thought Saturday nights would be OK with the Barlow fan club making a weekend of it, but with the Take That tour coming up and probably no chance they will see him at the stage door, they'll now be turning their attentions elsewhere.

I am also seeing the show tonight, got a front row seat for £30. Ohh where from? From row of the stalls, booked on the ATG website. I moved back in the second half, as there was no leg room, also being a lone middle aged male - sitting in the front row, I felt a bit of a voyeur.
