Saw it this afternoon with a truly ghastly audience who seemed to want to get drunk the second they arrived at the theatre and the clear-up after of their discards was really something: do people leave this much detritus in their living rooms? Anyway, I saw the Joe Mantello production on Broadway in 2009 and that was no great shakes but it was SWEENEY TODD compared to this one, which is a cartoon of a cartoon, so much so that I felt like penning poor, blighted Brian Conley a condolence note afterwards. Still, the audience for it will eat it up but it's going to get mauled by the critics. Bring back DIRTY DANCING -- all is forgiven. (Well, maybe not quite ALL .... !!) This is what is making me reluctant to book tickets. I just know that it will be ruined by the behaviour of the audience. |

The audience was very respectful and actually better behaved than the audience at Phantom earlier that day. |

Well... at least the three girls and Bonnie came out of those with great reivews!  Also, those who are aware of the Original Broadway Production, LondonTheatre1.com's review of the show outlines the differences in songs and placements: 'For those familiar with the Original Broadway Cast Recording of the show, ‘I Just Might’ now follows ‘Backwoods Barbie’, and ‘The Dance of Death’, ‘Cowgirl’s Revenge’, ‘Potion Notion’ and ‘Joy to the Girls’ have been excised completely. A song called ‘Hey Boss’ now appears between ‘Heart to Hart’ and ‘Shine Like The Sun’." |

Got to say I think those reviews are more than fair and glad to see one or two of them have picked up on Brian’s mumbling but have given credit to the three leads, who carry what is a pretty dire book.
The reviews won’t affect this show at all, the audience on Saturday were lapping it up and will carry this through to the end of its run easily.

I’d expect them to announce a much longer booking extension very soon.
It will be 9-12 months before a bigger show goes in there (Mean Girls being the most likely from what I’ve heard)

It would be stupid not too in my opinion considering it's doing so well. |

It will be 9-12 months before a bigger show goes in there (Mean Girls being the most likely from what I’ve heard) There was plans built in for a 2 month extension at least before the show opened if the show sold well. Given how it’s currently selling it wouldn’t surprise me if those plans were acted on. Seems silly to have a dark theatre when this show looks like it will continue to sell. |

It would be stupid not too in my opinion considering it's doing so well. If the reviews and the press generate interest then it will likely extend, the tourists could be pulled in by it. It's booking until end August so could be extended certainly into Sept and Oct. If it would make it until 2020 I don't know but if it was doing okay they could announce closing date in for Jan 2020 and hope they pull in Xmas period, party goers pre Xmas crowd. So 2020 could be possible and then a tour would be likely. |

I think this could be a surprise hit. It hasn't had a WE run before, it is a well known song/film, it is light entertainment, has a couple of "names" in the cast, and it will be popular with the coach party trade and tourists. The 2 and 3 star reviews wont affect bookings at all.
Waitress across the road at the Adelphi on the other hand...…….

Dolly is certainly selling this show; she is on every news outlet! Given it may be a slow day, but sky news and the BBC are showing her every hour and she was all over BBC Breakfast and GMB this morning. I don't think I've seen a show get this much TV/Social Media attention for a long while, big props to Dolly and the rest of the PR teams! This will sell and sell I imagine!

Surely the producers will realise this is selling fine and doesn't need half a name added to the cast halfway through the run...
Is there a way the can give her a payout and send her on her way, has anything like that been done before? It's a shame if Caroline goes for Louise to join, desperate to catch her if this is the case!

I'd guess if it was 6 months say then would it be 6 months from when it opened or could Producers say 6 months from when she returned? I could see Louise coming into the role for a run and then Caroline returning when Lou's contract is up. |

The show is mildly enjoyable.
However despite the efforts of the critics and Fiona Mountford waded in with her 2** Stat review, against the odds this is selling well and looks it might be a hit, similar shows such as Thriller and Motown had similar poor reviews and became hits.

3 new shows opening at the moment. 9 to 5, Waitress and Come from Away. If I was jo public and not a regular theatre goer I know which I would choose.

Whilst I agree that 9 to 5 or Only Fools will sell better, I think in the long run, Come From Away will be the show that has the staying power of the four. Both 9 to 5 and Only Fools are shows that are designed to just get the tourists in, milk them for a buck and then give them an enjoyable, if slight, experience. And those shows, in the longer run of things, don't garner as much success. I point to a show like Young Frankenstein. I commonly place at least Only Fools with this show as I imagine the audience would be similar for both for some reason. That show came out all guns blazing, was selling really well, but then it's sales started to dry up after people realised it was just fine and it closed after just 10 months. Only Fools also has the added issue. Other than in the UK, the show isn't iconic or that well known anywhere else, so tourists generally won't care.
Whereas Come From Away has amazing word of mouth, it is arguably the show to see at this point of the year, in London, has sold out since it started previews which considering it isn't based on a book or a film, is amazing. It's already had people going back multiple times. It's social media and promotional campaigns have been amazing. And it's in a small theatre. So it's chances of success in the long run appear, to me anyway, as far greater.

Apparently the programme lists one of the songs wrongly as 'Backwards Barbie' rather than 'Backwoods Barbie'. Did nobody ask Dolly?!
