The refurbished Tricycle now Kiln reopens on Wednesday. (5th Sep)
intrigued more by the Theatre than the play and will be there on Wednesday, the play, a middle class entitlement piece, a pet hate of mine and therefore will require an open mind offset by knowing I’m supporting what was/is one of my favourite haunts as they enter their next phase minus the scaffolding.

The second half of the season next year looks more interesting imo. But at least its flipping open again, taken long enough!

A play of two halves, prior to the interval quite anodyne and light making me wonder why this play was chosen as the opener.
After the interval everything becomes much darker culminating in a powerful finale with some god did they just say that moments along the way, felt particularly uncomfortable at times.
The mix of characters definitely contrived to make its point, which is definitely a point worth making and the play itself is well constructed and will stay with me.
Surprised how slick everything was for a first night and the performances were top notch, looking forward to the opinions of the Board, will likely be a marmite play,
The Theatre itself can be best described as a baby Bridge and whether you like the space will be determined by how you feel about the Bridge, for me the Bridge is maybe too large and the Kiln is intimate enough to let the play fill the space.
A welcome return of an old favourite.

The review in the ES (3*) comments that "given this venue’s history of staging fiery political theatre, it’s a surprisingly unadventurous choice to open the new era".

I saw the play this evening (first visit to the Kiln or refurbished Trike, which I thought was very smart, whilst still recognisable) and NeilVHughes has already summed it up far better than I could hope to. I was really surprised by the increasingly dark tone the play took in the second half, and even more so by the apocalyptic ending; anyone misled by the first act into thinking they were watching the modern equivalent of a drawing room comedy was in for a shock.
For someone to have described the opening play as "unadventurous" seems unfair to me as Alexis Zegerman's plays are well-crafted but not safe and indeed, I think what she has done here with an ostensibly familiar theme and treatment is actually quite brave and different. A shame not to see this lovely theatre full, especially on a Saturday night, but the new season looks very varied and promising so I hope it will receive better support as it continues.

I thought the theatre was really smart, very comfortable. Nice to see they've abandoned the "put together with meccano" look they used to have. The sausage rolls were delicious too. Daniel Lapaine is also still looking foxy which is nice.

A shame not to see this lovely theatre full I suppose alienating the older, pre-gentrification locals hasn't helped, and the play's theme - like the new name* - does seem very middle-class: my thought was that it sounded like a darker version of the smug/niche series Motherland. *If Nigel Slater took up pottery, he'd call the book 'Kiln'

Jesus! Am in town for the Pinters so popped over for a looksee and a booklet. Its effing well closed til 5.30. Whars going on? How can they screw up the name change plus close for two whole years and not perform then not be open during the day. Like i have posted previously. A comple clusterf*ck!!!!

I really liked the new interiors, both foyer and theatre: similar to before but smarter and brighter. I also thought the improved access to the auditorium (which now has aisles on both sides instead of one only) was a huge improvement. Twice as many aisle seats and therefore much easier to exit speedily to negotiate the obstacle course that is Kilburn High Road. The Kiln/Tricycle means an awkward journey for me and it's never going to be possible to make swift progress along the cluttered main road (Kilburn and Shepherds Bush must be two of the worst areas in London for pavements apparently not designed for pedestrians), so every little helps.
