Excellent review Emi, (especially from one as militant as you) 🤣Balance...it suits you x I mean I love a backhanded compliment on a Monday...but dare I ask in what way am I NOT balanced, something I very much pride myself on in reviews? And something I've often been complimented on by companies in my writing. So genuine question, in what ways are my reviews either unbalanced or militant?

Who sings the "sugar, butter, flour" pre-recorded bits? It sounds a lot like Sara

This is nice Dan...a totally balanced review that discusses the difficult issues within the show. I know I’m expected to be sarcastic, but not this time. (But yeah, you’re normally quite hard work 😂😂😂). I don’t think I’ve read any more of your reviews. Have you been to the theatre before ‘Waitress’?

How is Kat Mcphee's acting?. I presume it must be good. She has done lots of tv now.

Out of 3 newly opened shows I saw last week I put this one as the third. Way after CFA (and 9to5 is a better show for me as well) I’ve never seen someone as badly singing and acting as current Ogie. He got Ronan Keating from my personal pedestal of he worst celebrities I’ve seen in a musical. And if his acting choices seems to be fine for many people (I don’t mind, each to their own, we all have different tastes and sences of humour) but his inability to sing was really painful to listen. I’m so not ok with press praising him in the reviews Kat McPhee was a joy to listen but felt rather emotionally detached from where I sat (after 2+ hours of dayseating they put me in K dress, although there were plenty of seats of the similar price range as they got me in the stalls and even cheaper ones in the front row). I couldn’t connect with her so I only enjoyed her voice, and it suits these songs. Loved David Hunter loads, Marisha and Laura are amazing, but my overall impressions are not very high. I might see this show once more, from the stalls and with a different Jenna, but it is definitely not a “repeated visits feel good show” for me, as it was with Kinky Boots.

I (personally) don't like it - sometimes she scrunches up her face a bit like when she's arguing with Pomatter, but the rest of the time she's kind of glassy. Stasia puts it better than me when she says McPhee is "emotionally detached". It's like watching someone go through the motions.

Jack McBrayer isn't a singer but he acted the part very well; I suppose whether one enjoys his interpretation of the character is another matter. If you've seen him in 30 Rock, you'll know his comedy acting style. 'CFA' did very little for me when I saw it in Dublin before it transferred and I found '9-5' to be very tacky. These things are all so subjective so it's good to see the performance and make up your own mind.

Regarding Ogie can we not just apply the Cabaret Theory (sometimes known as The Judi Factor) which is that she wasn’t supposed to be a good singer?
Ogie is a joke, an oddball. I think it would have seemed very much at odds with the characterisation if he’d opened his mouth and sung like an angel.

But Christopher Fitzgerald managed to sing well and (I presume) act at the same time so it’s not SO big an ask to be a comedic actor who can sing

Third of the musical theatre characters would then be cast to be played by awful singers if “let’s find someone who can’t sing a note to make the character even funnier” was really a thing

Exactly this. Ogie as a problematic character aside it’s possible to play the part with integrity. Though scratch that as well playing it properly and sincerely at least opens up the discussion about him as a character and why Dawn goes with him etc rather than treating the whole thing as a joke.

I think if you're very careful and it's appropriate for the character then you can get away with an actor who's definitely not a singer but can hold a tune, a la Cabaret and A Little Night Music. It adds a little extra metatheatrical level if, say, Sally Bowles is singing her heart out but with no polish whatsoever. But Waitress isn't about performers, so you're not adding anything in that way by casting a non-singer, and in the nicest possible way Sara Bareilles isn't Stephen Sondheim, I don't think a single song from this show was carefully constructed to be thoroughly deliverable by a non-singer. No, not even this one. Compare the melody of Send In The Clowns with Never Ever Getting Rid Of Me, even a total amateur like me can tell which one is technically the trickier sing.

What about Gloria Grahame in Oklahoma. That beautiful score and then she squawks out “I Can’t Say No” in that hideous voice.
It’s a comedy part. She’s not supposed to be able to sing. In fact she might have invented The Judi Factor. It should be renamed The Gloria Syndrome!

I guess it depends on the performer, what it’s sounded like before etc. I like the characters songs and want them sung, not croaked. 🐸

Tbh, I'd take Vicki Simon or Ali Stroker as Ado Annie over Gloria Grahame any day (she's also still singing that song way better than McBrayer sang his two when I saw Waitress, plus you can very clearly tell that's an artistic choice when it comes to a movie because it would have been SO easy to overdub her if they'd wanted to, but with live theatre it is a bit more ambiguous as to whether you genuinely want the song to be sung in a hilariously not-great way or if you've cast someone who just ain't up to the task).
