Musicals have been based on outside sources since forever. Films, books, paintings, historical sources, religious sources, poetry, Shakespeare, plays, the works. And basing 'em on films isn't even that new, Oh, Captain! opened on Broady in 1958, based on a 1953 film. The original musical based on absolutely nothing at all is a much rarer beast than the nostalgic would believe. That's not how i meant it- some great musicals have been based on books/ film/ pre exisisting content since forever, and yes the all original are far more rare. But they didn't NEED to be based on anything to sell, it was an artisitc choice- the pre existing story inspired the writer, not the producer (if you know what I mean). There used to be a time i think when people went to see a musical because it was a new musical and needed nothing more. Now it feels like the thought process of most patrons is : "let's go see this musical- it's based of of this succesful film i liked in the cinema" or "this one because so and so (film/ pop star) are starring in this". People aren't going to see a new musical because it's just that- a new musical- that's why there is all this arguing over wether Hamilton is relevant enough to the British audience, or wether people have heard about the waitress film here. (Im not disagreeing or arguing with ali at all- just my take) the story of Waitress itself is quite an interesting one, I found it moving and earnest (though the book could use some trimming and shaping, but all in all it's fine, it's the music that doesn't do it favour). But people are concerned with wether they have seen it and liked before they have even seen the musical. The musicals I like most are the ones I went seeing knowing nothing about them. That's what I meant.

I love the idea of this happening, I am obsessed at the moment with the Cast Recording, it is fantastic! Sidenote: could you capital letter the "w" in the title, my OCD will end up going insane haha! (sorry to be a pain!)

Go onto "edit" your first comment, then you can edit the title.

Obviously American theatre, as witnessed in the Tony Awards has been overshadowed by one musical, but listening to both that cast recording and this one, Waitress has the best individual song.
So therefore look forward to this coming over.

Oh how funny, if this does open in the Spring of 2017 as hoped, it will be up against Hamilton again!

I will give it another listen I struggled with it first time round. Which song is its best moment? One of my current favourite musical songs, such a beautiful song and such an emotional performance. It made me cry when she performed it on the Tony's. I'd love Jessie to come over with the show too, hopefully she will be in talks.

It is a good song. What sort of theatre would suit?

It is a good song. What sort of theatre would suit? I think it needs quite an intimate space I'd say, it's in one of the smaller houses on Broadway.

The Brooks Atkinson is 1069 seats so I'd say somewhere like the Gielgud, Noel Coward or at a pinch The Harold Pinter. It's a shame The Girls is going to the Phoenix as that would've been a great theatre for Waitress.

The physical cast recording has still not been released (I did preorder it on amazon.com - 8th July), but judging by their Tony performance, I'm not in a rush to see this show.

I've been listening to the recording on and off on Spotify, and have really been enjoying it. This is despite it being quite a pop-orientated score. I would definitely have a look at this if it were to come over.
Speaking of the Tony Awards, is there anyway to watch the different performances? Barring the opening number, nothing seems available on YouTube, which is surprising. There also seems little in the way of acceptance speeches.

If you google Just Jared, the top link, has pretty comprehensive coverage of the Tonys including videos of all the performances.

I like the cast recording. Having said that, you can tell that the composer is a novice when it comes to musicals. There's clearly a lot more craft and effort put into the Jenna songs than the songs by other characters. The overall experience in the theatre could be different, but judging by the cast recording alone, the Jenna songs are a bit more on a league of their own.

I wouldn't be at all surprised now if this came over, it has just had its highest grossing week ever at $1,100,048.00, third $1,000,000.00 week in a row and fourth overall $1,000,000.00 week. It just seems to be going from strength to strength!

It just seems to be going from strength to strength! So impressive! Well over 100% of potential gross and seating capacity! I really hope they will find a theatre, I think it would do well in the West End, it's just a very approachable show with great music. Though I do think Jessie Mueller plays a big part in the succes, she's just unreal. So I'm interested to see how that will work out here as I don't think she will come over.. Any super early casting ideas? I think Rachel Tucker could be an amazing Jenna!

Really did not enjoy this. It's got a good score, and Mueller is great, but it's a bland and flavourless show.
