That's some dodgy photoshop work there. Quite liked the original image (above sans principals) for the promotional theme.

Am just re-watching the film now as I finished work early, and it really is just amazing isn't it. I can't understand more now why it is considered one of the greatest of all time. Especially with, for me anyway, the choreography, which is just incredible.

I wonder if we will get lucky and see this transfer to the West End too. With a cast like this with some performers that really deserve to shine in the West End, it would be lovely to see.

I don't think there's a West End space that would work to transfer from Royal Exchange, Manchester. It's a very unique space.

So, I’ve had a look for tickets in the first week whilst my son is oop North with his Nan and it appears to be sold out. Me & the wife will be horizontal on sun loungers in the Canaries, but I’d like to give them a treat while we’re gone. Will more tix be released? Do they do ‘day seats’ of a sort? He’s a child, she’s a pensioner? What are their chances?

It is a beautiful venue and we’re very lucky to have it, although I think some of the choices they have made about the social spaces are questionable. That “pub” thing which sprawls it’s nasty tables across a quarter of the Exchange’s floorspace preventing you from walking round the lunar module would be the very first to go.

This was the theatre that gave me a love of plays whilst the Opera House and Palace in Manchester were my musical theatre ‘teachers’.As sixth-form students,my friends and I used to dayseat for the banquettes at the REX and saw the likes of Vanessa Redgrave and Tom Courtney just a few feet away from us and paid next to nothing for the immense privilege. The futuristic lunar module inside the old Corn Exchange was and still is an inspired and breath-taking design.West Side Story inside this intensely atmospheric and almost claustrophobic space could be one of the great musical theatre ‘must-sees’ this year.

Its a fantastic space, so atmospheric. I well remember my very first visit, from school, seeing Patricia Routledge in The Rivals. I hope West Side Story will be as memorable too. Just one point if I may, it’s the old Cotton Exchange, not the corn exchange. The corn exchange is now a nice development of restaurants, and if I’m not mistaken, the original theatre in the round which later moved to the Royal Exchange , was actually in the corn exchange.

Thank you for this. You have inspired me to spend a few minutes reading up on the history of this iconic building on the REX website.Just had a quick scan through my programme collection and found to my astonishment that I must have seen a very young Kate Winslett before she became famous.

A bit off topic, but for anybody interested, the REX do a fantastic backstage tour. Costs £5 for a tour which lasts 90mins to 2hrs.

You’re quite right, me too, Kate Winslett was in “What the Butler Saw”, and Hugh Grant was in “An Inspector Calls” , then there was Liam Neeson , Helen Mirren , Ben Kingsley .....

At the risk of de-railing the WSS thread and with apologies, just a few memories after looking at old REX programmes....Smoke by Rod Wooden in 1993 when vast swathes of the wealthy fur-coated ‘Cheshire set’ (as we called them) walked out of the theatre in the first Act as the very fruity language upset them. The Odd Couple in 1989 when I thought I was literally going to die laughing and The Lodger previews in 1994 when the director,Richard Wilson asked me what I thought of the show in the interval with notebook in hand. What a theatre and what memories!
