Out of interest, I wiki'd Dennis and he's been in a fair few stage productions at various points, including Art and Skylight. I've never seen him live but I assume he must have at least a decent grip on stage acting to be cast in a variety of shows that aren't just "man being funny". Agree on Matthew Kelly - apparently he was at drama school with Julie Walters and Pete Postlethwaite!

The RSC has partnered with TodayTix for shows in Stratford-Upon-Avon - mostly full price and no sign of rush tickets, but they are offering upper gallery seats for £20 for As You Like It and Taming of the Shrew.

All three shows will transfer to the Barbican, no details of other tour venues I can see yet.

Just looked to see if they've announced London dates yet. They haven't but the tour dates for the three shows have a gap between 5th October and 29th January so presumably the usual Barbican run over Christmas.

I am not sure that telling us they are transferring some shows counts as a HUGE ANNOUNCEMENT. More like stating the obvious!

And 2 months later they finally get round to announcing that As You Like It, Taming of the Shrew and Measure for Measure will be on at the Barbican from 26th Oct to 18th Jan. Given how obvious this is I have no idea why they don't just announce it when they announced the rest of the tour! Hope they still have the front row for £10!

Saw the matinee of Taming of the Shrew today, thought it was excellent, funny, inventive. The play isnt one of my favourites of Shakey but the gender swap worked pretty well i thought. Recommended.

Saw The Provoked Wife on Saturday night, got a £10 ticket in stalls Row D which was great value. The play was long but very funny, Alexandra Gilbreath and Jonathan Slinger were excellent as usual. Caroline Quentin likewise did a great comic turn, I'd never seen Natalie Dew on stage before but she more than held her own alongside some top comedy performers and RSC veterans.

Les Dennis did very little, it will be interesting to see what sort of role he has in Venice Preserved as it would seem strange to cast him if he's only virtually part of the ensemble unless he just fancied doing a stint at the RSC as something different to do.

Quick and easy members booking for the Barbican this morning on the RSC web site so got all the £10 (discounted to £8 for this OAP) centre front seats I wanted. RSC has all the seats on one side of the auditorium on sale. Presumably the Barbican sells those on the other side to its members.

Just checked a few dates this afternoon and for all the dates I selected most of the front row was still available.

A poor season so far, of the two I’ve seen AYLI the better one as Shrew didn’t work for me as the gender flip did not include the physical attributes so the closing monologue made no sense and defeated the premise.

Not booking anything for the London transfers this year, the only one deserving of a transfer is Kunene and the King.

Here’s to Measure for Measure in a few weeks time even though the two restorations look the most promising.

The Provoked Wife is good. We also preferred As You Like It to Taming of the Shrew which as you say didn’t quite work. Tough to make a better job of Measure for Measure than the recent Donmar if they are planning any gender changes. No idea if they are or not.

Provoked Wife roaringly good. The always luscious Alex Gilbreath a joy. Quentin v funny. Slinger good also in an unsympathetic role. Venice Preserved tonight. In the shop i see the Walliams/Williams souvenirs have been moved further from the main counter,not that im bothered though others seem to be.

I recall Angelo attacking her pinning her back on a psychiatrist’s couch. Did you see the famous Jonathan Miller production ? I would have loved to have seen it.
