some bits with the set were sloppy. The looking glass was floating and swaying all over the place and during a quiet song at the end the two parts of the flat set came together with an almighty clump. Ridiculous! It was like watching the Gangshow. I didn't notice the looking glass swaying and I was front row! The flat set clunk though.... embarrassing. I physically winced.

I was also there tonight and was a little disappointed at some of the changes that have been made since the beginning of the tour. The Mad Hatters fear of sharks has been erased. Nooooooo! Alice's monologue bit when she came out of the looking glass has gone. Now she comes out and there is basically no change at all to her and no real reference to the ex husband at all. It doesn't make sense! The firing at the beginning is now done by Wendi, not Natalie (all that sitting around bored backstage must be starting to grate... perhaps she could Face Time Nicholas Lyndhurst?!) Also some bits with the set were sloppy. The looking glass was floating and swaying all over the place and during a quiet song at the end the two parts of the flat set came together with an almighty clump. Ridiculous! It was like watching the Gangshow. Half expected to see one of the stage hands looking gormless as they'd forgotten to move away from the set in time. Apart from all that I loved it Hey now! I hope you're not dissing Gang Shows shady23...I'm a Gang Show MD and proud of it!

There's a Sunday matinee tomorrow. Rachael (who hasn't been on all week) is playing Alice.

Am catching the show on Saturday in Wimbledon. Wasn't too fussed whether or not to see Kerry (I like her, but not to a point of disappointment if she isn't on), am mainly going because I love the score, but also for Natalie McQueen, as I've heard great things and she was fantastic as the alternate for Kerry in Murder Ballad.

Benjamin Yates made his Jack debut in the Sunday matinee today. Would have loved to have seen that!

The score is really good, although if you've listened to the Broadway version there are some differences to the songs and lyrics. Natalie McQueen steals the show, in my opinion. Her character transition is pretty incredible and her vocals are just amazing. Her duet with Kerry gave me goosebumps. There's some great feedback about Benjamin Yates' debut as Jack today. I would have loved to have seen that!

When I saw the show a few months back I enjoyed it. But one thing I found a bit strange was the show had quite a few alternates. Several of the company seemed to get a show or two off. So who you see may depend which day you go. I know that Kerry did 6 shows out of 8 and this was advertised which is fair enough but chatting to other cast members after a matinee they said they were finished for the day and asked what else was on at other local theatres.
It seemed that various people played different parts at different shows. The show didn't have huge parts as it was an ensemble and none of the vocals seemed excessively hard. Kerry may well have only been prepared to do 6 out of 8 given she has a young family and I know they have been on tour with her but others doing less seems strange.

Update for those asking, Michelle Pentecost is on as the Mad Hatter this Thursday as mentioned above by the lovely shady23. However she has injured her ankle so if it is not better, it will be the Understudy rather than Michelle.

Francesca Lara Gordon is first cover for Mad Hatter. She's been on a couple of times.
Just reading the programme and first cover White Rabbit is Michael Morgan who is also the resident director of the show! Is this the theatre equivalent of the player manager in football? ☺

Okay so, Wonderland...well it's just a bit meh isn't it. There's some cracking tunes in there, it has to be said. The opening number and the end of both act 1 and 2 I really enjoyed, but other than that I wasn't overly fussed on the score. Though I am going to from hereon in rename the show "Power Ballad the Musical" The book...oh boy, the book. What a bloody mess. I think the less said about it, the better. I get the whole, Alice in Wonderland with a twist thing, but there were just so many holes. One second the Hatter is fun and loving life, next minute she's a friggin psychopath who wants to take over the world and chop off everyone's heads, and then five seconds later and just like that *clicks fingers* she's all happy again, and it is in fact the Queen of Hearts who is the baddy. Who, incidentally, has about ten minutes of stage time in the entire show. The performances...I'd heard much in advance about Kerry Ellis being passable at best, and Natalie McQueen being an absolute revelation. Well, to my utter, genuine surprise, I disagree I was actually really impressed by Kerry. I didn't think I would be, I think I was almost ready to not enjoy her performance, but I have to say I really liked her. Her voice maybe isn't what it once was but she did her songs justice, and I had absolutely no issues with her acting. Natalie McQueen however...hmm. Her voice is amazing, there's absolutely no doubts about that, but that's kind've it for me I'm afraid. I didn't warm to her acting. At all. I didn't sense any stage presence from her at all, I thought her diction was poor, she just didn't click with me I'm afraid to say. Diction was equally poor from the little mouse, the March hare and Alice's daughter. I did spot the Producer watching the show tonight so hopefully they'll get some notes. Although it was a lovely surprise to end up sat next to Mark by pure coincidence...no badges needed! So yeah, some good songs but it's a thumbs down from me. Two stars.

I'm slightly saddened that you didn't enjoy Natalie, as she sounds the complete opposite to what she was in Murder Ballad which was a really serious part she acted the crap out of (ironically covering Ms. Ellis). I was looking forward to Natalie in this haha!
