Not the national theatre musical. But the Frank Wildhorn's musical is set to tour the country next year, I only found out by chance, via an advert, didn't see any press release on this. I saw the original on Broadway and it wasnt as bad as people made it out to be and the second half, was a big improvement on the first half, but still wasn't great, but passable. www.wonderlandthemusical.com/Might check this out in Bromley. |

Poor Frank Wildhorn. He gets sniffy reviews of his own, and now might DISbenefit from wonder.land's bad press!
Perhaps publicity should carry the strapline:
"NOT direct from the National Theatre"

I am intrigued which producer has the money to burn making this happen.
One of the biggest flops in recent Broadway history makes for a very courageous choice for a new production...

Wildhorns terribly bland sappy messing around with European history and literary classics deserve all the sniffy reviews they get. Although to be fair, often it's Jack Murphy's terrible lyrics that kill songs.
Wildhorn is best (or dare I say "only good") when he does Americana like The Civil War and Bonnie & Clyde. I would love to see Bonnie & Clyde somewhere in London, but I'm done with his trashy literary adaptations after suffering through the Count of Monte Cristo and the godawful Rudolph in Vienna.

And poor Alice after the sh*t in Manchester, London and soon to be Paris ... Hasn't she, we and especially the French suffered enough already

Well, to be fair and counterbalance your argument, that was a couple of years ago under 'Speckulation' and although headed by Neil Eckersley, there's more than just one person in a production company. Moreover, he's now under Neil Eckersley Productions Ltd, and has produced quite a few concerts at The Pheasantry including The World Goes Round at St James and he's also behind bringing Bernadette Peters over to the UK for her concerts. The creative team for Wonderland is also quite impressive - so if it's good enough for all of them, many of whom I'm sure will have been aware of the Speckulation problems and have had no complaints so far, and if he's been legally allowed to rebrand himself after Speckulation and produce well-publicised shows, it's good enough for me! |

Surely this must be a bit of a kick in the balls for the National!
Good marketing though! Looking at some of the tour venues, I can't imagine it being a huge production though.

I really like some of the score (i'm a sucker for a big power ballad) but the book is a mess, so its interesting to see that someone has done a UK adaptation. Still, i think it will need a major overhaul to make some sense. The full Broadway production is on youtube.

It's dong the Palace Manchester as well which isn't small.
Ive never really liked Alice In Wonderland as a story and I've never seen an adaptation that didn't grate on my nerves. All that surreal/madcap stuff. Hate it.
The producer in question was a member of the old board (or at least someone posted claiming to be him) so he us quite possibly amongst us here.

I have wanted this to come over for years, I was a fan of the Cast Recording and the videos I did see. I remember reading a while back that a London production was originally planned for late 2016. I wonder if a brief London production is planned ahead of the tour or if the tour will go into London after?

Casting could be an important factor for this one. If they get someone well known for Alice they can sell it on the name.
The shows actually not bad, I caught it in New York just after it opened (it may have still been previewing actually) and enjoyed it for what it was. It's got some great tunes

Means nothing, all shows are designed with venues in mind and are to built to be adapted, don't forget, Cameron's Oliver and Les mis went to the Alex in the 90's when the Hipp was being done out, Jersey Boys last year/this year??? went to the Cliff's. Don't judge on the touring schedule. |

I was badly burnt by Wonder.Land Wonder.Land was terrible, but this is a different show, so it seems unfair to infect this with that one's reputation. Unless you actually hate the Alice story, why not give it a go? Agree and I probably will, everything deserves a chance. |
