Lucie is on today (Sunday 8th January) This made me laugh. It's almost as if an understudy performance is being announced. Sorry just got excited when I saw the cast board - she one of my favourites and most seen Elphaba 😂😂

Laura Pick is returning to Wicked tonight to play the role of Elphaba (17th January, 2023).
Amy Webb was scheduled to be on tonight but it appears she is off ill. Not sure why Laura Harrison or Nicola Espallardo are out.

Laura Pick is RETURNING tonight. This is the 5th or 6th time she's been called back since this cast took over. I'm not sure what is happening at the AV, but this contract has been disastrous all around for the mediocre performances given. You can call out attendances all you want but performances have been anything but mediocre in my view.

You can call out attendances all you want but performances have been anything but mediocre in my view. I have mainly seen the American casts, but seeing the London cast over the past 5 months have stood out as some of my weakest viewings of Wicked. I will say that I immensely enjoyed Natalie Spriggs as Morrible, Joe Thompson-Oubari as Boq, and Carina as Glinda, but they are not the principals. It felt like this production was missing a lot of the energy that returned to the US productions post-covid.

Lucie is on holiday and Amy, Laura and Nicola are unwell. I'm sure they'd prefer to be able to perform, bit harsh calling out "mediocre performances"!

Laura Harrison sounded like she was losing her voice in a YouTube clip I heard recently from January. I was surprised she wasn’t replaced for act 2. Not surprised Laura Pick is back. Perhaps some of the understudies are needed in the ensemble too.

Interesting to see a lot of people on twitter commenting on how Elphaba needs a steady alternate.

Interesting to see a lot of people on twitter commenting on how Elphaba needs a steady alternate. I know this an unpopular opinion but Rachel Tucker and particularly Willemijn Verkaik did it for donkeys years, knocking it out the park 8 shows a week consistently...if you're good enough you're good enough and can do it 8 shows a week...

The only thing I can agree with here is that this is indeed an unpopular opinion.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Willemijn actually DID have alternates for the vast majority of her run. Not for Broadway and the West End, of course, but I'm pretty sure that Sabrina Weckerlin, Roberta Valentini, and Renee van Wegberg were were alternates in Germany and The Netherlands and NOT her standbys.
In any case, I think both statements can be true. The role can need an alternate, and also the Elphabas in this cast are notoriously unreliable in terms of being on (though, to be fair, everything I've heard and seen of Lucie suggest that she's always dynamite when she is on). Even some Elphabas who have banged out eight quality shows a week consistently have said it should be a six-show role with an alternate. I'm all on board with the role having an alternate for the sake of the health and longevity of the actor and her voice, but an alternate wouldn't fix this situation, particularly since that alternate would be Amy. Lucie misses more shows a week on average than the six she'd be doing with an alternate, and Amy's near-constant absences would be exacerbated by having a set two shows a week. If anything, Laura and Nicola may have ended up being on even more in such a scenario.
Also, did anyone else see that Lucie actually responded to a tweet in that whole twitter discussion? I've noticed more of the Elphabas doing that lately - including Talia, Emily Koch, Alyssa, and now Lucie. I'm a fan of the fact that they have the agency to speak their truth, but also... each time I've see one of them post in response to a less-than-glowing comment, it's always them being defensive, but... the original commenter generally hasn't actually been wrong, so it's like... eh?

I think what some people seem to conveniently forget is these people have worked their whole life to be there - some comments made feel like they’re suggesting that their absence is through choice.
If I’m being paid 500+ a show to play Elphaba, a role I’ve wanted forever, and that payment gets docked every time I’m absent, why would I choose to be at home over being at work? Nobody knows the pressure on someone’s body or mind - there could be all kinds of unseen injuries which mean doing the show is ok in moderation, like an old knee or rib injury for example which tend to flare up after use but go down after rest. Meaning they can do a couple of shows fine then it hurts. Or the post-covid vocal changes, which many singers have felt, where the voice gets tired quicker.
It’s very easy to sit on the sofa at home scrolling through West End Understudies and think it’s very straight forward but there are many factors at play. The fact that Lucie, Amy, Laura AND Nicola have been, at times, unable to go on meaning previous cast members have had to return suggests that this isn’t just Lucie or Lucie and Amy’s issue. I’m sure they’d much rather do all 8 shows between them consistently and be done with it. There’s something fundamentally different about playing this role in that building at the moment.
If someone tweeted about me being unable to do my job? Regardless of why I was unable to I would get defensive. These women are still human beings after all, regardless of how much they’re being paid or how much media training they’ve had.

Does anyone know what the person on Twitter said to Lucie? They've deleted it now.
