Natalie A also had problems with her vocal cords and that why she didn't finish her standby run. I saw her 1st show and she was brill. She tried to come back but unfortunately between Sherrie (Which is also a demanding role. Jodie Jacobs & Cordelia Farnworth both said the same in ROA year 1) and Elphie just messed up her vocals x

I don't mean to be a negative nelly, but - I just cannot get excited about the idea of a Wicked movie. In my opinion, the best about Wicked is the thrill of seeing it live - the beautiful costumes, the epic set, Elphaba flying before your eyes. That spectacle will inevitably get lost on screen and all your left with is a convoluted plot and a handful of nice songs. I can't help but feeling it'll be more along the lines of the Cats movie as opposed to Les Mis... Yes I think that's completely true. Nothing about the show feels "filmic" and that's perhaps why the stage show has had so much success (its innate theatricality) and also why it seems to be one of those films in "development hell" and has been for years. A netflix miniseries based on the novel? Or a musical miniseries using songs from the show? Maybe? Or perhaps go real old-school film musical. No CGI, with elaborate costumes, animatronics, very stylised?

Honestly I’d much rather they just professionally film a performance of the stage show and release it to cinemas. I just can’t imagine it translating that well to film.

Really interesting interview with Kerry Ellis here. She reveals, for the first time I think, that she thought she would be opening Wicked London as lead before Idina was brought in as lead very late on.
And be that her Broadway transfer was a straight swap for Idina.
also interesting hearing her talk about the difficulty of playing Elphaba 8 shows a week: “it should be 6 shows a week or less. Sadly I don’t think that will ever change.”
I agree with what Kerry has said about how Elphaba should be a 6 shows per week (or less) role! Time and time again we have seen incredibly talented performers who have damaged their voices beyond repair from playing Elphaba full time. An alternate system should be put in place to allow performers who are leading the role to maintain their vocal health throughout their run. Not to mention it would also enhance the quality of the performances that the lead is present for. It's a win win.

Not just vocals but the mental and body demands that come from the role will be immense too ie constantly being compared to other actresses online, and the raked stage probably takes its toll too.

Kind of yes to this...it will cost an absolute fortune to create Oz on film so it should be all or nothing. Just film the show or spend a fortune world building. CGI won’t really cut it as there isn’t that much for it to cut.

If it's going to be an adaptation of 'just' the musical (not the book, which I agree would be a fantastic miniseries), I wouldn't bother trying to add too much or making it modern and realistic. I'd make it as much like The Wizard of Oz in style as I could, so minimal CGI and as much done with traditional effects/make up as possible (obviously updated a bit to avoiding coating your actor's lungs with aluminium or giving somebody second degree burns...).
I thought Mary Poppins Returns was a good example of matching style to the original, but that works perfectly well on its own.
A pro shoot of the stage show would be nice instead or as well.

At this stage, it's impossible to tell. Covid-19 has shaken up the theatre world so much, it's one of the hardest impacted industries at the moment. With uncertainty around the vaccine, we have no real date for when the theatres can reopen.
I imagine many shows will be conservative with their spending once normality returns, which will lead to any "new productions" being suspended until shows are more financially secure and consumers have more confidence in the economy.
Assuming the vaccines that Moderna and Pfizer are producing are effective and rolled out efficiently, I could see a new tour potentially running by 2024/2025. Ultimately, we won't have any realistic timeline until the situation with Covid-19 is settled.

Is it just me but does anyone else think by the time the film adaption comes out in 100 years time it will go straight to Netflix or whatever streaming service will be avaible at the time. I recon that will be the case in the future.

That Google search also says that Idina, Kristin and Joel Grey are in it! Believe nothing. No one has been cast yet. It will probably rumble along for years at this rate.

Good interview here with Louise Dearman about her time in Wicked, both Glinda and Elphaba runs. We hear so much from actresses who play Elphaba that I think it's good to hear more about Glinda and the challenges the role has. Also nice to hear her talk about her final Glinda performance and her 'Die Alone' belts.

Jon M Chu (director of Crazy Rich Asians and the new In the Heights movie) has signed on as director of the eventual film adaptation, replacing Stephen Daldry.

Jon M Chu (director of Crazy Rich Asians and the new In the Heights movie) has signed on as director of the eventual film adaptation, replacing Stephen Daldry. And predictably his twitter account is being flooded by Lea Michele superfans desperate to see her play Elphaba... and those who refuse to acknowledge that Idina and Kristin are now too old.. Luckily there are also enough really good suggestions being made as well - Samantha Barks, Jessie Buckley, Ariana DeBose, Rachel Zegler, Adrienne Warren or (gasp) just doing an open casting call and finding a new star! Interesting that Glinda casting suggestions don't appear to be anywhere near as divisive and about three quarters of the twitter suggestions are Dove Cameron...

No word from the show regarding a provisional return date? I know a few other shows have announced scheduled re-openings for the summer, but these are all socially distanced performances.
I imagine with the costs of running Wicked, it wouldn't be worthwhile to reopen until a larger capacity is allowed?

I imagine with the costs of running Wicked, it wouldn't be worthwhile to reopen until a larger capacity is allowed? They take loads of seats off sale midweek so socially distanced wouldn’t be too big a hit but they have shown no sign of doing that. It’s their 15th birthday in September so hopefully before then!
