‘I think we’ll have a festival-type model of programming. And I know it was authentic to have high ticket prices, but I think we need to dismantle that. It’s extortionate, it’s elitist in a way we’re completely not at the Globe.’

This winter we invite you to play by candlelight in the gilded beauty of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse as we look to the past in order to question the present.



In our first festival of the season – ‘Ambitious Fiends’ – we pair Macbeth, Shakespeare’s meditation on the corrosive nature of power, with Christopher Marlowe’s pact made between the devil and Doctor Faustus.



In the new year, we find ourselves ‘On the Shoulders of Ghosts’ as we turn our gaze to notions of identity, sexuality, desire and power in Richard II and Edward II.



We invite today's writers to respond to Shakespeare and Marlowe with a range of new writing. Dark Night of the Soul is a collection of writing by women responding to the Faustian bargain, whilst After Edward regards the king with a queer eye.



Ralegh: The Treason Trial is an immersive verbatim account of the trial of an Elizabethan hero, performed 415 years after it shocked the nation.

... all of which I have to say is not that exciting, given how commonly performed all of the main 4 plays are. Like the sound of the verbatim Raleigh thing though.

Michelle hasn't done much to influence the pricing in the playhouse by the looks of things. I may send her the bill from my osteopath just to make a point.

Yes, can't find a seating plan but the range of ticket prices in the brochure looks about the same as before.

There is a serious lack of detail here.

To announce a season without a full raft of directors to go with it seems odd. With oft produced works like Macbeth and Faustus, I need a bit of a clue about the approach to be taken before committing.

If you are trying to sell on title alone, you are doing your audience a disservice

I think Michelle is having to pander a bit to all of the old folk who were so up in arms about the Emma Rice era so she's having to pull out some of the old favourites to get them back in.

It seems an odd policy to do four revivals all of which could easily sell well on the main stage, not sure what the point of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is if this is how they are going to programme it.

Personally think this season is most exciting for years....of course,time and casting/creatives will tell but ,to me,seems to be exactly what Wanamaker is for .

When the Wanamaker was launched they said it was to explore the repertoire of Jacobean plays staged in the first indoor theatres, to date that is what they’ve done - not a single one of the plays in the new season qualifies.

These are the Macbeth Productions I’ve seen or booked to see this year:

Rose Playhouse
National Theatre
RSC
Factory Theatre
Wilton’s Music Hall x2 (Includes the wonderful Dance Version)
Pop Up Globe York

Will now add the Wanamaker Production and I’m sure there’s at least one more being scheduled somewhere.

But still a rather exciting exploration. Similar with RSC Swan......minority Eliz and Jacobean plays plus experiments in language etc.Thats now all but abandoned with shows like Miss Littlewood coming in.i regret that but guess the planning has to be realistic although don't see Littlewood drawing a largely tourist crowd. Back to Wanamaker...great to see Marlowe with Shakespeare in tandem and idea of festival themed surround is enriching.CAsting the eye across London this winter there is so much of all genres that I don't want to see Globe duplicate which is what happened with ER when most of the shows could have sat well elsewhere. We shall see and,of course,my thoughts are my own initial response to the announcement. Believe that Michelle Terry does have an intelligent plan.

Very dull with the main plays, why do these ones yet again? Why not Middleton instead of Marlowe who was dead and gone before the Blackfriars (Middleton already present in a minor way in Macbeth)?

The way no directors have been announced is a concern, are they choosing plays and then shopping them around? If they have got directors lined up then it’s poor marketing to leave them out. After underwhelming changes at the Young Vic and the Globe, I live in hope that the new Donmar and Lyric Hammersmith regimes are a bit more adventurous.

Interesting point - the RSC have often announced plays without having cast any of the leading actors but but never with the director not known. Maybe the result of having an actor as AD ?
