According to the NT Live ad I have just received, "Vanessa Kirby is ‘sensational’ (Financial Times) as Julie, in this role which follows on from her BAFTA-winning performance as Princess Margaret in The Crown and Mission Impossible: Fallout." I saw the film at the weekend, and did indeed appreciate the royal addition to Tom Cruise's crack team, even if she was perhaps less agile than the lead. All those cigarettes...

If she is indisposed for the NT Live screening then I wonder if they’ll go with the understudy ? If not, why ? Just a hypothetical question.

The stories I know through my theatre grapevine, about Ms Kirby's... "party lifestyle," shall we say, are very amusing. She sounds like a great fit for Julie in all senses.

Probably no match for the authors...if the plays are anything to go by. In fact, during Julie I had a sudden moment of parental concern and the thought flashed through my mind that I hoped there were people around who were properly looking out for her.

I saw her in Edward II in 2013 at the NT - I though the play was crap but she was beautiful, a standout. Hopefully she's just being young and nuts and will be OK in the future.

There is no way she'll be "indisposed" for that. Indeed. Richard Madden did the NT Live of Romeo & Juliet with a broken ankle or whatever it was keeping him out of the show, so Kirby won't miss the NT Live of Julie.

I saw this (with Kirby) around 3 weeks ago and was completely underwhelmed.
I've seen almost everything at NT in the past year (actually probably the past 15 years) and I think, in that time, the Lyttelton has had almost as bad a record of productions as the Olivier.
Since Angels in America the only two plays in the Lyttelton I've been entertained/stimulated/absorbed by were Oslo and Network.
The best work seems currently to be in the Dorfman.

Apart from Nine Night a lot of plays in the Dorfman were not originated by the NT. Barbershop, Home, Consent - All were developed by other theatres. I feel the NT currently suffers from a lack of vision.

Especially as the NT works in rep so could very easily have just not scheduled these performances... If you don't mind, what does "rep" mean in this context?

A number of plays at a time ‘in repertory’, so that they are scheduled to alternate as necessary. Pretty much all other theatres in the UK have continuous runs but it is much more common in major European theatres.

I was confused because I thought "repertory theatre" referred to a single theatre company which does a selection of plays.

Saw this, this afternoon. I'm afraid I don't have a clue why it needed to be presented at all. Couldn't find a single original thought or illuminating idea in the entire 75 minutes or so. Ms Kirby was back on, and I can't tell if she is a good actor or not as she didn't really have anything to work with. Abrefa was criminally wasted, for sure. More on my site. Oh, and I nearly, so nearly remarked out loud "Shredded Tweet" at the appropriate moment. Somehow I resisted, but it was close.
I agree, I saw this last week and I just didn't get the point. I thought it was fine. The acting was fine. The set was fine. But what was the point and why should I care about any of them? I felt extremely detached from it all, as though it was a film or something and it was all happening over there, and had nothing to do with me. I wondered whether it was because I don't often go to proscenium arch theatres, but I saw Jane Eyre there too and absolutely loved that, felt entirely engaged and involved with the characters.
I don't really know much about Scandinavian drama, and this felt very much of its time. There's nothing shocking now about a rich woman having a bit of a breakdown or about her sleeping with an employee. I just didn't care about any of them (except the budgie). It reminded me of the recent Hedda Gabler, which I also couldn't be doing with.
Afterwards my friend and I were talking about how this compared with Hedda Gabler and The Deep Blue Sea - I liked Vanessa Kirby's character a tiny bit more than HG, but I didn't care much about how either of them ended up, compared to me feeling utterly gripped by Helen McCrory in The Deep Blue Sea and really caring what happened to her. I don't know enough about it to be able to pinpoint whether it was the actor, the director, the writing or what. But I just couldn't care about poor Vanessa Kirby's character, no matter how fabulous her skirt was.

Well. I can't remember the last time I saw something where I veered between being utterly bored and laughing hysterically at almost the same time. If the dance break at the beginning didn't do it for me, by the time everyone started crawling into the dishwashers I couldn't stop myself. And don't get me started on the ugliest outfit on London's glitzy West End and the dry humping on a ladder. Sadly in between these moments of fun and laughs the rest was pretty dull. Just unpleasant people saying unpleasant things and behaving unpleasantly. I had a grandmother for that and didn't have to pay for the privilege.
I don't think I'd let Nessie look after my pets though. No matter how much she begged.
Seriously, Princess Margaret wouldn't have put up with this twaddle. She'd have buggered off to Mustique with Roddy Llewelyn and a bottle of duty free gin instead. Hello? British Airways?

I’m glad I saw this on entry pass and didn’t pay any more for it! That hour and whatever it was didn’t half drag on, one of the most boring things I’ve seen this year. The only part I can say I actually enjoyed was the very ending and by that I mean what happened with the set. Something just didn’t click for me but those around me seemed to enjoy it, so that’s something at least.

everyone started crawling into the dishwashers How is that possible? Sounds like watching you @ryan would have been far more entertaining.

Very film like, I liked that bit. The thing with the dishwashers was just weird. What was it FOR? In that production of The Glass Menagerie last year there were similar moments when people just appeared through sofas or whatever, but that made sense to me, like the way memories or dreams just appear from nowhere and someone is suddenly there without arriving. But in Julie... not so much. And why did she need 4 dishwashers anyway?

Yes you are right, the set thing at the end was very striking, best thing about the production by far.

And why did she need 4 dishwashers anyway? One for the every day crockery, one for the good crystal, one for staff, and... one spare? Or one for pets?

Well I do hope they were stacking them properly and not just crawling in any old how.

Also don't forget people very rarely post negative posts about theatre on Twitter. Add to that NTLive (unless the transmission mucks up).

Actually, this could be read as negative... "Rebecca @becci_Nembs27 4h Well #Julie @ntlive was incredible. Every person in the audience got up and left in complete silence and awe at the end."
