There is definitely a market for this, maybe it's just too expensive or maybe there's not been the promotion needed to sell tickets. They really need get Joe on the daytime telly circuit for a start.

Sales for Edinburgh are diabolical. The theatre is pretty much empty all week. I feel for the cast, who will undoubtedly be doing a great job, but will be stuck in a cheap, tired production with little public interest.

I wouldn't write it off that quickly. I haven't seen it and probably won't but sales this week and next are strong especially at the weekends. Of Course Edinburgh is dire, the arse has fallen out of the advance sales market on tour and now, unless you're a Wicked or Les Mis, 70% plus of your sales come in the final 4 weeks. Not my type of show but I think, at this stage, looking at the on the week sales, and one week out that it will last the tour.

I'm not even sure that the sight of Kate Robbins as a Spanish maid singing the theme from 'Minder' can save this entirely but at least her and Joe Mcwhatsit have a go. I think even Larry Grayson would have taken Joe aside and asked him to tone it down a notch or two to be honest.

So you DID go then, @ryan? I was waiting to read your review or hear that you had resorted to rioting as threatened. Or both.

Glad to hear that the reliable @ryan put on a good show, even if the production itself was lacklustre.

Well, I started this thread, so think I should weigh in about Thursday in Bromley. Tacky! Offensive! Dated! are all ways you could describe this show. It's all rather funny if you're in the mood for hen party humour and can see it as a parody. From what I can tell, they worked out what songs they were allowed to use and then formed them into a plot. Several are used in a karaoke scene. If you don't think too much, the music and the performances are quite good. A lot of this could be ripped straight from 1980s TV sketch shows. You can just imagine aspects appearing on Little and Large or Cannon and Ball. Must be hard on most of the cast, who weren't alive at the time. Frankly, if you can't remember that far back, this probably won't work for you. The humour isn't exactly sophisticated. The level is along the lines of "I'll just jump over this puff" (referring to the furniture, not the very camp man lying on it). There are lots of gay jokes, many as offensive as they were in the 1980s, but here they're acceptable if you treat this as parody. Joe McElderry is very easily the start this is based around. Our Joe is really popular with the audience too. Everyone loves Kate Robbins, who pulls off all her impressions from Spitting Image. And I thought Kane Verrall was brilliant, who I've seen recently in Twang! and The Sound of Music (and his camp style here worked much better than it did for his Rolf). It is all a bit of fun. Totally forgettable, but if you go in looking to brighten up a dull evening, and you like being surrounded with lots of drunk women, you'll have a good time. And there's a fun moment in Making Your Mind Up, which I saw coming, but also shows how much they've designed this all to appeal to straight women and gay men. I booked with a Groupon deal and was rather surprised to find my seat wasn't preallocated. I did end up with side Stalls, fifth row, with an excellent view (particularly with the wide seats and good rake in Bromley), but I was lucky in that there were lots of seats free. So plan ahead if you use Groupon elsewhere. I hope sales pick up, but there are lots of offers everywhere. The whole idea of this one is rather a hard sell. If they base the advertising more on 1980s nostalgia (apart from a brief "future looking" nod at the end), almost all of this could have been performed then. We can see how things go, but I'd book early in the tour just in case. I was at the same performance, for a show with a virtual static set, surprised that the stage manager had to stop it for 10 minutes. However my expectations for this were non-existent and only went because I got a ticket for £12.50, however I have seen a lot worse, but saying that I have seen a lot better, I certainly didn’t leave the show disgusted and dejected and now actually struggling to remember the show, but it did come across to me as a bit end-of-the-pier.

Yes, how could I have forgotten to mention the show stop! But it did give some of the ladies around me the opportunity to slip out and refill their drinks.

Is every song in the same key? And what's Joe McElderry doing with his voice? Is he trying to put on an accent?

Just his natural accent - it’s very done as Brits abroad apart from the maid and a questionable scouse at one point.

So the report back was that it is extremely camp, very cheesy and full of slapstick humour. However, the hubby really enjoyed it! He said Joe was pretty good and Kate Robbins basically recreates her Babs character from Dinnerldies. Also the theatre was almost full, so some venues must be selling ok

I always presume these shows are sort of designed to be heavily discounted i.e. the need to discount is already sort of built into the price plan?
Like when DFS reduces a sofa to £400 from £800 even though it was only briefly £800 for a couple of hours last November sometime.

Saw this tonight a wet Wednesday in Wolverhampton with a closed off upper circle half full circle and stalls ...... and ... well must say everyone went out happy and smiling and and played along panto style during the show and it ended with a standing ovation .... I know took me by surprise too .... yes there’s lots wrong with it .... and it’s basically a cut price Benidorm stage play with songs ... it’s almost the same exact story 🤪 but more loose ends Joe does a great job keeping things moving along and is great with the audience was a lot of love for him tonight surprised me how good he actually is Kate robbins stole every scene she was in with her Rosario / mrs overall cleaner .... and multiple impressions that had audience in stitches Rest of the cast are pretty young things 😊 and fit and work so hard don’t know how they keep going If you need a bit of camp fluffy Benidorm mamma Mia wedding singer theatre and can get a deal give it a go it may surprise you too

The show is corny but it was great camp fun with lots of double entendres etc. For anyone who grew up in the 1980's then I'd recommend it for an escapist night out. Certainly be a good one for hen parties and fabulous guys.

The cast work hard but you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Even as jukebox musicals go, this one insults the intelligence with dumb plot holes and crass jokes. Well- I can only speak of the first half...

Does anyone know of any discount codes for this in Liverpool? Normally they would have send some out by now for a show this quiet!

I was at tonight’s performance at the Liverpool Empire. Despite a rocky start (we had a show stoppage within 10 minutes of the show starting due to technical issues), i actually had a good time tonight. Ok, plot wise it’s wafer thin, but with plenty of crude humour and on stage energy from the cast, as audience member you can’t help but sit back and enjoy the ride. Myself and the other patrons tonight definitely had a great night and left with a smile on our faces.
It’s the first time I’ve seen Joe Mcelderry on stage. How much energy does that lad have? He’s like the Duracell bunny of the theatrical world. Like others have posted, I was really impressed with his singing and won over the audience in seconds the first time he made his stage entrance. Though for me, the star of the show was Kate Robbins as the cleaner. She had everyone in stitches with her impressions (even her Jim Bowen one). The biggest cheer was for her Cilla Black impression (which really was spot on). A special mention to the young male cast members who were well received by a large percentage of the audience every time they took their shirts off.
Vocally, I thought the cast was very good and even having the on stage band, I didn’t feel the band drowned out the vocals.
I’ll confess that on my way to the theatre tonight, I thought that this is the sort of show that will bring out the bad behaviour brigade in force and ruin the show for me. As it turned out, everyone around me was fantastically well behaved on the whole. We had some good natured heckling from some patrons which was taken in good spirit by everyone and at the audience participation segments, everyone joined in.
It’s a light and fluffy piece of theatre, but personally, I enjoy these kinds of nights out at the theatre every now and then when you don’t have to think too much about what you are watching.
