Also, I can totally see Gemma Arteton being an amazing Mary Poppins if he tour does transfer!! The likelihood of it actually happening is very small.... Oh yeah j know the likelihood is super small but I think she'd be great |

There really does seem to have been a lot of holiday cover from what I've seen online. I'd love to see Edwin Ray as Bert but as far as I know both of the cover Berts have only done one show each. Any idea if Matt Lee has any planned holidays? Would also love to to see Edwin as Burt, unfortunately don't know if Matt has any planned holiday...will see if I can find anything out. Is it possible to find out whether Zizi Strallen has any holiday dates during the Mayflower run? I don't mind seeing her again when I go to the 29th May performance. I'd just like to see what Jennifer Davison is like |

I was slightly disappointed that Zizi wasn't performing and perhaps that is why I didn't immediately warm to Jennifer as Mary until about 30 minutes in. By the end, I had thoroughly enjoyed her performance but cannot compare her to Zizi, of course. The production overall was quite magical with Rebecca Lock playing a great Mrs Banks and Wendy Ferguson providing some good laughs as the maid, Mrs Brill. Would definitely recommend! |

I see thanks! Looking at the list of venues (that the first tour didn't go to) I find it hard to imagine it working in some of them, but clearly they must find a way - can't imagine the part of the show without!

I think that's why it didn't come to London (e.g. Wimbledon) because, although the theatre is really big, the stage isn't very big for the set and she wouldn't be able to fly into the top. Also, maybe it's because they're hoping in a west end transfer?!

Theatres that size only have stuff go there for one week, two at the most. Something big like Mary Poppins which is running about a month in each venue, wouldn't fit there. |

It's a shame this show is touring into January as it would've been a nice fill we for the Phoenix for 5 months. Could've just come in from tour and set up their set - would've done very well in a theatre that size especially over the Christmas season.
With Drury Lane now occupied, o don't know where this will go unless someone needs it as a filler or if 42nd Street is only a limited run

It's a moot point I know but would this actually be able to fit into the Phoenix given the complexity/size of the set which is much more substantial/impressive than the average touring production? It should be against the law to stage anything except Once in the Phoenix anyway!
Personally, I think Mary Poppins would have been a much better fit for Theatre Royal Drury Lane than 42nd Street - and the timing of Charlie closing coincides with the Mary Poppins tour coming to an end perfectly - but c'est la vie.

There's no way that Poppins would ever fit info the Phoenix, the show is designed for theatres with much bigger stages and capacity,

Not a hope would Poppins fit in the Phoenix I saw this in Norwich a few weeks ago. It was good and I enjoyed it but it did really feel like a tour. Apart from Rebecca Lock (sensational) and Mrs Andrews every other cast member felt like the second understudy. You know, they were good but just not perfect for the role. I also thought it was directed to be hammed up a little. All over the top and lacked the authentic performances I was used to with Poppins. Zizi was good but no Laura or Scarlett. She lacked warmth in her singing acting and singing. Mary is a difficult role to play, the balance of strict, fun, secretive, good witch etc. Bert was a good dancer (Tap Dogs Australia) but again lacked the star presence of a tall leading man. The flying was good and did happen in various places (including over the audience at the end) but overall I felt the pop up set felt like a pale imitation of the original West End and Broadway look. I also do still have issues with the toy scene/Temper Temper/new song at the end of Act 1. It doesn't work for me. I do hope this comes into the West End again, It's a super show and would be great to have in London again. |
