I saw this last Friday as well and loved it, some bits did seem a little bit slow but the dance numbers and costumes more than kept my spirits up. I loved Matt Lee as Bert and thought he was fantastic in the role, it made me want to learn to tap especially on the roof!! I couldn't keep my eyes off Zizi when she was on stage her mannerisms and facial expressions just drew your eye towards her. Glad I've finally managed to see it as had been waiting for the show to come back to the UK for an age after missing out last time. I have got myself the Mary Poppins umbrella and now searching ebay for a shirt so I can be Mary Poppins at Halloween haha! I have seen two musicals in two weeks. This one where I know the film almost word for word and the other (which I will post later) I had no idea of the film. Not sure which is the best? I loved this musical (mostly). (However I kept harping back to the film and wanted it to be a replica) I have to agree with you Musicalfloozie that some bits did seem a bit slow but the dance numbers and costumes (and the set) kept my spiriis up too. The stand out performance for me was Bert. He was amazing and deserved the standing ovation he received. My other favourite was Mrs. Brill (have had to check here to see who was playing the parts as didn't buy a programme www.marypoppins.co.uk/) I thought she was a natural. Loved the voice of the Bird Woman too. The set and the special effects were absolutely amazing and to see Mary Poppins travel above the audience was incredible. Well done her for having confidence in her wire supports! Well done to all the cast for their vitality. |

I'm sorry I don't know.
I didn't buy a programme and I didn't look at any cast listing in the entrance (shame on me).
Sometimes one can focus on a certain individual in a performance and for me it was her (as well as Bert).
If it was her she was brill!!

Made it to opening night .... Few very subtle changes to the other tour but not much you would notice really ? Unless anyone knows differently ? Cam Mac was making so much about new special effects and magic ?
First half was ruined from where we were sat due to latecomers , sucking last remains of drink through a straw during feed the birds ! Constant loud talking and phone lighting up !
I agree a few scenes seemed to drag I don't remember thinking that last time ... Wasn't keen on mr banks at all Mrs banks was excellent as was Mrs brill and the lad who played Michael was very good too ... The sets. And dancing and of course the flying at the end saved it all .... Second half audience were more respectful and quiet which helped us at least enjoy the second half

I would love this to come back to London. It would be at home at the Victoria Palace but I think Hamilton is rumoured to go there.
Any ideas if it could transfer?

I've heard it referred to by people on the show as an "International Tour" so I wouldn't be surprised if it had a further life overseas, not too dissimilar to how the Lion King UK Tour went off to Switzerland. |

Seeing this again at Birmingham.
Anthony Lawrence is on as George Banks, and although his youth plays against him he does a Stirling job
We also have a white Mrs Corey with a Scottish accent. Don't know who the understudy is
As much as her acting is great Zizi's vocals are still bothering me. I kinda like to see what her understudy is like

I saw the understudy Mary, Jennifer Davison in Bristol a few months back and her vocals were much, much better than Zizi's. Her dancing wasn't as good but overall, I much preferred her.

Jackie Hughes was on as Mrs Corry today - she also covers Mrs Banks and Bird Woman - completely different to seeing her as Elphaba!

Don't get me wrong, Zizi's finest moments came in the quieter moments such as "When every job when it's complete", when she sang the lyrics softly.
On the other hand, when she has to pull off high notes alone in songs like "Practically Perfect" that vibrato is distracting and at times harsh to listen to. You can hear it on the Variety recording.
Out of interest Sue when you saw Mary Poppins in Bristol, did confetti cannons go off to announce Mary Poppins arrival at the end of Precision and Order (Reprise), showering the stalls with pink flower-like confetti like the projections? I too saw the show in Bristol and I definetly don't remember that. The sudden pops of the cannons felt so out of place.
By the way I had an odd occurrence tonight. When I went to the correct door to the stalls I offered my ticket to the usherette. Out of nowhere she asks "Do you know where you are?" before she even looked at the ticket
No lady, I am a bit lost. I was meant to be seeing "You can always hand them back" at the Skycity Theatre in Auckland, New Zealand. Could you point me in the right direction?
Maybe Birmingham Hippodrome employs philosophical ushers

The "cherry tree" confetti does indeed happen at the end of the Cherry Tree Lane song every time! We do have some interesting characters ushering at the Hippodrome I must say!! |

There really does seem to have been a lot of holiday cover from what I've seen online. I'd love to see Edwin Ray as Bert but as far as I know both of the cover Berts have only done one show each. Any idea if Matt Lee has any planned holidays? |

Thanks, if you find anything out I'd love to know. I've seen Edwin in some of Matthew Bourne's productions and think he'd be a lovely Bert. I'm sure Adam Rhys-Charles (he's the other cover right? I don't have my programme where I currently am) is too but it's Edwin I'd really love to see. |

Seen it tonight in Birmingham and thought it was practically perfect, but only in almost every way.
Maybe I'm spoilt from other shows with amazing kids (School of Rock, Billy Elliot, Matilda), but unfortunately, both kids weren't that good. They rushed through their parts and swallowed several syllables and words and I had problems understanding them.
It took me a while to warm to Zizi's Mary Poppins, but after one or two songs in the show, I really liked her portrayal. Just realised I haven't seen her on stage since Rock of Ages closed.
Really liked the set and costumes, thought it was a great production value, especially for a tour.
We had Jacqueline Hughes as Winifred Banks. I enjoyed seeing her in a completely different role than Elphaba.
Tonight was a signed performance, and I do hope that the interpreter negotiated an extra on top of her usual salary for having to translate supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.
