Am I just shorts out of luck for Measure for Measure if all dates show "returns only" and "wheelchair spaces available"? What would be best way, if there is one, of getting decent ticket? I'll be in town 27 Oct - 19 Nov.

They release an allocation of tickets every week for performances in two weeks time - www.donmarwarehouse.com/visit/tickets/"More tickets will be released on general sale every week from Monday 10 September. Sign up to our KLAXON tickets newsletter for a reminder when additional tickets go on sale." Other options - - keep an eye on the website as they do put returns up on sale - often they'll release more tickets for all performances in the run-up to opening (they just did this for Aristocrats, I think). Usually they will announce this on twitter and by email. - standing tickets are release on the day if you can cope with standing! |

Your ticket costs and arts subsidy
Do not anywhere near cover productions costs
For most shows
For some such as Follies
And A&C
There is a production syndicate
Please don’t pretend everyone is entitled to the same in life
When some are funding others in all aspects of living

I've just seen Aristocrats. David Dawson is terrific - a mesmerising performance, and I'm delighted to finally get to see him on stage. Most of the others were really good too, though there are a couple of weak links I thought. Still, it's a preview so they might improve (and learn an American accent!). The set and lighting were rather disappointing - a cold, minimalist minty whiter-shade-of-pale sunken rectangle, very reminiscent of The Inheritance, and which didn't in any way suggest a decaying house and its grounds: if anything, it played against it and the props. And would the accents not have been a bit more 'cut glass' - boarding school / finishing school and all that?

And Andrew Scott played the same part Dawson is playing here when ARISTOCRATS was done at the Nash in 2005. It's a great play but tricky to do well; we will see.

Parsley, I don’t think we come to this Board to be preached at. We all know that we are privileged to be able to go to the theatre at all. Some of us pay a bit extra through supporters' schemes and there is no harm in discussing the relative merits of these. It will be a sad day when 'culture' is inaccessible to all of us because it is so expensive we can’t afford to go and so it becomes like an aristocratic house party from Tudor times before they built theatres or because it has been banned by a totalitarian government. See where I’m going with this? We treasure our theatre and nowhere is it more treasured than on this Board. We pay what we can and we keep the makers of Theatre up to scratch to continue the broad and diverse and quality work that makes for civilisation.

I saw this at the second preview on Friday and in my view it was spot on and will only get tighter and better with running. I am a fan of Friel but have not seen this play before. I have had mixed experiences of Lyndsey Turner as a director (loved A Miracle and Contractions; mixed feelings about Posh, Light Shining Over Buckinghamshire and Hamlet). I thought this was imaginative and compelling as a production. The staging is minimalist and the unpeeling (literally) of the past of the house really worked for me. The stand out performances were David Dawson who has a peach of a part and absolutely nails it (I have no idea how damaged Casimir is - probably very!) and David Ganly the exact opposite in terms of understatement and believability (the croquet match is brilliant!). Elaine Cassidy is channelling Celia Birtwell (Hockney model) and Aisling Loftus has an amazing ability to convey all the damage that all the children have suffered with a smile and a flutter. By opening night this will be a 5* show in my opinion for sure!

Donmar box office have just emailed:
"We regret that, due to an unforeseen technical issue, this evening's preview performance of Aristocrats has been cancelled. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause you. We never take the decision to cancel a performance lightly. Our team has been working hard across the weekend to rectify the issue but, unfortunately, it will not be possible to fully resolve before this evening."

Such a shame There are some amazing special effects
The house comes magically out of the floor
With all the levels folding out
And rotates around
The machinery must have broken
Or perhaps the holograms of the Gardens are faulty

Technical difficulties? I didn't realise Sheridan Smith was in it?
I'm really rather pleased about the cancellation as it happens. I managed to double book myself so something was going to have to give. Dame Peggy Ashcroft and the theatre Gods must have been smiling down on me. They're probably loving this really smashing shirt I'm wearing today. Thanks Peggy.

Unless all the lighting has conked out, I really can't see what would be worth cancelling the show for - there was nothing in the staging that couldn't be explained to the audience as they went in, so they could fill in the gap mentally. I travelled to see this from the North West so would be mightily peeved if that had happened on Sat!

Btw, I do think, from what I've seen of her work, Es Devlin is a peculiar choice of designer for this play.
