They didn't seem a very happy company at the curtain call, and they are absolutely silent on twitter.
I'm tempted to book again for wednesday night now, see how the replacement gets on. I don't remember him at all from the first time.

What sort of sudden illness means you know for sure you can't perform for the next ten days? Has he had a falling out with someone, do we think?
Not that it's any of my business I suppose. I'm not sure why I'm so nosy about it.

My first thought is stress, signed off with a doctor's note. Or a minor injury that takes about a week to recover from but again, signed off with a doctor's note. Or maybe a minor surgical procedure, but whatever it is, if they're specifying ten days (rather than "until further notice" or whathaveyou) then I feel very strongly that a doctor's note must be involved somewhere.

Maybe things are different in theatrical circles, but in my experience, when someone is 'wished well' it is always through gritted teeth and never sincerely meant.
It's the same when someone 'leaves to pursue new opportunities', which is code for 'they've been fired'.
(I've had a couple of the former, but none of the latter...yet!)

Lucy Black didn't even get a 'wish her well'! Not that I can find anyway.
It did occur to me that perhaps Joel Gillman disappeared part way through the play - the character was offstage for quite a while after the party/fight scene and then came back on a trolley all bandaged up and covered up - he could have been anyone. And then he didn't come back for the curtain call.
It's all very mysterious. Oh well.

Just to add to the on stage drama, I've had an email saying that there are train strikes by Northern Rail as well on saturday. This is going to be an interesting day out if nothing else. I'm hoping that any cast issues have been resolved by the weekend and the show will be without incident! |

Today's matinee, the first public performance with the 're-arranged' cast, just happens to be captioned. I imagine that's the last thing you need if you're not entirely up to speed with your lines!!!

The Saturday matinee was the signed version, and I loved it. The woman was fab - it looked so poetic. I can't sign, but I do know quite a few specific signs because my mother used sign in her work when I was growing up, so I like watching it and picking out ones I know, and recognising others that are obvious. On Saturday I think I learnt the sign for 'dark' and for a bell ringing.

Having watched the matinee performance today, I want to take this opportunity to say that with all the disruption and cast changes that this production has had,this was an excellent afternoons entertainment and those cast members who stepped into different roles than originally cast for did a brilliant job to ensure that the show must go on. Certainly,the standing ovation in this case was warranted just to show our appreciation for the cast under very difficult circumstances.
The production itself I thought while excellent,the set I thought was very minimalistic. I thought more could have been done with the stage to create a more realistic hospital ward environment. Though what props where used certainly did convey the setting.
Its been a good 10yrs plus since I last attended the Crucible theatre, and I forgot how intimate the theatre is. For a £21 ticket, I definitely got a bargain with being on Row D and so close to the action.
