I know Tommy Steele is eternally youthful but the fact he's now over twice the age Glenn Miller was when he died is pushing it a bit.

Exactly the same creative team (and Tommy...) as The Glenn Miller Story which BKL toured (which I saw and incidentally thought was a very classy affair) but now with a slightly different title and artwork. Not sure what the deal is here! And (not related to daniel's post) with Tommy's age, well in The Glenn Miller Story tour, Tommy came out as Tommy and gave a brief monologue type thing about how much he loves Glenn Miller before launching into the story, where Tommy 'became' Glenn, so I can see the argument about his age, but if they keep with that convention, I buy it much more than an 81 year old playing someone in their pre-40's with no set-up or explanation. But we'll see! |

I know that I had a pretty ropey nights sleep, but I’ve woken up to the news that a sub-Blackpool pier Tommy Steele starring Glenn Miller tribute show is going into the Coliseum. Is there appropriate space for that many coaches to stop on St Martins Lane? Will there be extra air con installed to remove the waft of perm lotion and pear drops? Who will be older; the audience or Tommy Steele? Why is this happening?

This again proves, as has been discussed in other topics, a major demographic of the UK theatre going public is white, 50+ and (probably mostly) middle class too.
This helps forms the choices of what theatres and producers put on...

Tommy Steele is a legend! Legend is not always a complement! Quite often it just means old and doing it for the cash. We sat through the first act of ‘Tommy Steele - What A Show’ about 20 years ago and it was outdated and out of touch back then. This is for the grey pound, but if it keeps them off the streets it’s no bad thing. |

What puzzles me is what has Tommy Steele got to do with Glenn Miller?
As far as I know, Tommy Steele does not play the trombone nor did he ever sing any of the Glenn Miller songs like "Moonlight Serenade", "Chatanooga Choo Choo" or "In the Mood", and Glenn Miller did not sing or have big teeth!

When I saw them lined up outside the New Theatre here in Oxford when he was touring the Glenn Miller thing here a couple of years ago, they are well into their 70s. |

I have been told off on this board in the past for making derogatory remarks about a show that I hadn't seen, and here I am doing it again! I do know however that I greatly admire Glenn Miller and his style of music, and the last time I saw Tommy Steele (at the Palladium in "Scrooge") it was heavy going. But I will wait with an open mind to see what other people think of the Glenn Miller show before saying anything further about it – apart from what I just said! |

I mean granted, I've wanted to slit my own throat listening to Michael Ball doing Sweeney Todd. But come on, he's never been arrested for murder? Why was he even playing that part? |
