Finally saw it today - full cast apart from second cover Orpheus.
I was glad to see Gloria who was great, and I was glad to hear that music again, as it's one of the best scores in years and the OBCR is so so so good, but I was so bitterly disappointed in the performances.
Glad people are enjoying it, but I won't be going back unless the replacement Orpheus and Eurydice are...spectacular - will stick to the cast recording.

Managed to catch this last Saturday. All principals on. Wow. Stunning work from everyone. Band and ensemble were on fire. Special mentions go to Donal Finn and Zachary James respectively.
Donal is such an endearing Orpheus. From a socially awkward, self-involved yet hopelessly optimistic composer to a broken, battered, fearful cynic, his character development is fantastic. 'If It's True' is heartbreaking in it's roar against the cruelty of the universe, 'Epic III' is an ethereal masterclass in storytelling and his performance in 'Doubt Comes In' is especially devastating as he truly conveys Orpheus's final descent into complete terror, uncertainty and yes, doubt. He will be missed.
Zachary's Hades is a brilliant combination of sinister and camp. His intimidating height and his low notes combine to make 'Hey, Little Songbird' quite unnerving. His bullyboy mocking of Orpheus transitions to a dazed, remorseful reunion with Gloria Onitri's sassy Persephone. Almost like Rupaul if he was a Mafia boss!
Go see it.

It seems like I'm very much in the minority here, but I didn't enjoy this nearly as much as I thought I would be going in. Watched it around a month ago with all principals, and I wasn't a fan of the high-pitched breathiness sustaining many of Orpheus' songs. For a retelling of a classic well-known myth, the overall interpretation/contexualisation seemed slightly shallow. Audio mixing also seemed slightly off for several numbers?
That being said, the staging is brilliant (early in the show, I loved the implementation of the metatheatrical 'audience'), and the standout is easily the musicians -- those trombone solos!

Is this beginning to slow down? Seems to have a lot of availability.
That said, the Broadway production has fluctuated greatly over the years and that has managed to keep going.

It's a funny one because for me, it's not a show that I naturally want to see over and over.
It may be because it's darker in tone, and more intense. I also wasn't a huge fan of the cast.

The show takes itself very seriously without a wink.

Having looked at some of the cast’s recent social media follows, I *think* it’s possible to have a stab at working out who the new Orpheus is… my guess would be Dylan Wood…

Going to try the TodayTix Rush for this for Thursday evening. Anybody have experience with trying for a single ticket to a weekday evening? I just got a single seat in row C stalls for tonight - at 11am. This was after numerous all tickets held messages between 10.00 and 10.10 and then two Sold Outs so if you haven't succeeded yet don't give up !

I went in at 10am and got the held message, so just opted for something else instead. Kiss Me, Kate at the Barbican, slightly different. 😂 Have another chance coming up for a matinee Thursday in early September, so will be more patient then!

Really enjoyed this yesterday. I knew very little about it, and was aware it could be a bit marmite, but wanted to catch Grace and Donal before they leave in a couple of weeks. Donal is barely on across his final fortnight but thankfully the production website does list the dates he’s off so I could book accordingly.
Plus, dynamic pricing seemed to be going in our favour this week so I got front row of the dress for £70 when it’s usually £100+. Great seat and view, and having seen what they do with the revolve and choreography I’m so glad I didn’t go for the stalls.
I’ll admit I spent the first 10/15 mins thinking ‘hmmm I’m not sure this is for me’ but something kicked in around Livin’ It Up On Top and I began to really get into it. There’s some beautiful songs and melodies woven into the show and the cast were great. I think there were several swings covering roles as Workers and Fates, and the Fates in particular delivered some gorgeous harmonies. There were three though and at the very end up on the balcony, and then at curtain call, only two appeared, which I’m guessing isn’t standard, so hoping the third is ok and not sick / injured.
I’d seen Melanie in & Juliet and loved her in this too - so expressive and really held it all together in the narrator role. As others have said though, with not knowing the story, and with the music loud over the vocals, I didn’t catch every word she sang so had to surrender to just enjoying the songs in a couple of places. Similarly with Donal - some lines weren’t as clear as I’d have liked. And Grace, I loved her in Sunset, but was slightly less impressed in this although she’s still a star. I felt in some places she needed to belt a little bit more. Perhaps all three were just minor victims of the sound mixing. Gloria wasn’t on as Persephone, but Lauren Azania was fantastic - I guess Persephone is the OTT / slightly comic character (in places) and she really delivered. A cliche but I’d never have known she wasn’t the lead.
It was a strong 4/5 for me - great to hear and see something new and a bit different. Yes there’s similarities to other shows - in places it reminded me of Come From Away and Once, but depending on who is cast as Eurydice and Orpheus I’m pretty sure I’d enjoy a repeat viewing. Especially as I’ve come home humming Way Down… and Wait For Me.

I finally saw Hadestown earlier in the week through Rush and the only part I (also) didn't enjoy was the forced high pitched singing mainly in act 1 by Orpheus. Reminded me of the mating cry of foxes we get in our garden occasionally !
Am I right in thinking it's always performed like that ?
