it was such a great fit to the Olivier... Really? I thought the set looked like a bedsit dumped in the middle of Wembley Stadium. It looked ridiculous on that massive stage, even after it did it's big 'thing'. |

I would imagine Nimax wants something big to reopen the theatre after Thriller being there for so long and I'm thinking it'll either be Hadestown or perhaps Oedipus |

Yeah I sat in the stalls once and it didn't look as bad, but it was still noticeable. It looked dreadful from the circle though, even the front row. I've seen many shows from the circle and none of them have ever looked that bad. That set was far too small for the whole production, they all felt crammed into that tiny space even from the front stalls. I much preferred the Canadian set. |

I get so excited when people post in this thread thinking that it's informing the world of the show coming back to London.
REALLY hope it gets a re-transfer back to London later this year.
Regretfully, only saw it twice at the National when it came to the end of the run (on consecutive weekends).
I'll be crossing my fingers.

I rushed and bought tickets to 3 performances all off of the back of loving Comet so much and the Chavkin connection/raves from it's workshop performances.
However it was the total opposite to Comet in every single way for me.
While Comet was charming, warm, witty and inviting, Hadestown is obnoxious, cold, joyless and smug.
I absolutely loathed the set and direction.
I did really love the music however, it is beautiful and DeShields and Page were both magnificent. But everything else about the production left me completely cold with no emotional connection to the material at all until the tacked on encore.
Gray who was so phenomenal in Comet, seemed bored, above it all and going through the motions here.
The 2 leads seemed lost and all but absent in their own story.
None of the 3 people I took with me liked it beyond the music either.
I also found it a little disrespectful that the National was being used as an out of town workshop for Broadway with constant 'oh we're going to make so many changes before Broadway' bandied about in every interview.
NO!
You get your sh*t together BEFORE you hit the main stage at the National thank you very much!
I would however give it one more chance now it's apparently 'perfect' simply because of my love of the score and I'd like to see what the set looks like in a theatre it actually fits in properly.

I also have good reason to believe that this will be returning to London in the near future. I’d personally like to see it return to the Olivier, I’m still kicking myself that I waited too long to get tickets and missed it.

I love the score to this, would love to see it back in London.
Enjoyed it at the National, but have to agree the set was *tiny* for the massive Olivier stage. And would love to see another actor play Orpheus, I found Carney a bit squealy, but think that could be to do with his material....

My daughter got her distinction grade for her Irish dancing exam tonight,but her joy at receiving that news was nothing compared to telling her the rumours on this show as she simply adores the cast recording and sadly we didn’t get to see it live...

Booked this shortly before my trip to London just because I had one empty slot in my schedule and this was feeling like the next big, overhyped thing... and I wanted to be able to say, that I actually saw it. Knew nothing about it, when I entered the Olivier and saw the set I said: this seems to be the director of Great Comet and then I looked at my program.
Anyway, didn't like nearly anything about it, enjoyed Patrick Page, was shocked by how bad and uncharismatic Carney was. Didn't like the music, which probably was the main problem for me. Nearly left at intermission. The only things I can praise the show for are the enthusiasm of the cast and the diversity of the cast, which felt very natural.
I don't think this should return to the Olivier, the NT may revive their own plays like War Horse or do a second season of Follies, but not get a commercial Broadway show back into their theatres. If the producers are confident about it let them transfer it to a West End venue.
