I think the show is smart for changing to Tuesday evening as it allows more people to see it, maybe a pen star midweek matinee would be better in school holidays or when the tourists come in summer. However, I don't think it will extend again by October, I think a new show will go there. To be fair, it would've just done just under a year in London by October. It was originally only going to be a 12 week run at the Savoy but I think the closure of Beckham and the fact it did had good business prompted the transfer to the Phoenix

Saw the matinee on Saturday having gotten some very last-minute tickets. If anything this has gotten better since I saw it at Chichester two years ago, a very energetic and lively production of one of my favourite shows.
These are very well-defined and infamous roles with no little expectations attached to them, and to that end I think the four leads are doing a stupendous job and working very hard to bring something new to these characters. I particularly loved Siobhan Harrison's Sarah Brown, who she played as much more energetic and good-humoured than usual. The chemistry between her and Oliver Thompsett (particularly during their first scene, such a great interpretation for Sarah to be receptive to Sky and laughing at his antics from the start) was blazing and their singing on-point. Gavin Spokes absolutely brought the house down as Nicely-Nicely, blowing the roof off the theatre by the time SDYRTB came along.
My only complaint was that the understudy for Nathan Detroit was on, and while I have no problem with this despite Richard Kind being high on my list of reasons why I wanted to see this production, it was incredibly disappointing that the theatre made no kind of announcement whatsoever and the first the audience found out was when the understudy took the stage. The understudy was excellent (if incredibly David Hague-esque), but this is not fair on him or the audience. If it was a last-minute thing, don't they normally make an announcement over the PA?
One tidbit I found interesting from eavesdropping in the audience regarded the understudy for Big Julie, who wasn't listed anywhere in the programme. Apparently he was flown in from the UK tour at the last second? Either way he was just great!

The Nicely Nicely from the Tour, Jack Edwards, posted he was doing the London show yesterday too so a bit more interchanging going on between the two productions.

I also saw this last week (but not the Saturday matinee) and have to agree that the production is in fine shape at the moment. I found it has more life to it than in Chichester and is so much more enjoyable as a consequence.
Apart from missing Jamie Parker (who was in fine voice when I saw this last year) I found the current cast to be better. Personally I much preferred Samantha Spiro,she puts so much feeling and comic detail into the role. Liked the gangsters in general, Gavin Spokes in particular. And (sorry adrianics) Richard Kind was my favourite thing in this; he has excellent comic timing and gets extra points from me just for the way he utilises his very doleful face in every scene!

I think Jason Pennycooke is excellent in this too. I much prefer Oliver Thompsett to Jamie Parker.

It was Guys and Dolls at the Savoy where I've seen the worst understudy - announcement/knowledge by the staff. I hoped it would be better at the Phoenix but obviously not. Then again, last time I was at the Phoenix there was nothing anywhere so had to assume we had the full cast.

The only notice up on Saturday was that the understudies for Big Julie and Rusty Charlie (although they mixed that up and said that [actor's name] will be played by Rusty Charlie, which made me laugh) were on. It's just occured to me now that the reason the Rusty Charlie understudy was on was because the normal Rusty Charlie actor was playing Nathan Detroit instead of Richard Kind. This strikes me as sneaky and deliberate, and is pretty much a dick move on the theatre's part.

Yes I totally agree, it did very well at the Savoy so they probably wanted to just fill the gap at the Phoenix so it wasn't a dark theatre. Very surprised that is isn't doing well and the circle was closed, why are lots of shows not doing well at the moment?

It's a shame but due to the huge costs involved people have to pick and choose and are less willing to take a risk on something they are not sure of.
I didn't think it would be for me but my local theatre has an offer where unsold seats are half price two hours before. I could then justify it, went along and loved it. Have seen it five times now. It really is a great show with memorable songs and two fantastic casts.

For what it's worth I would never sit through Guys and Dolls again even if I got free tickets. I guess it just doesn't appeal to everyone. Although, going by just the Oliviers performance (if I hadn't already seen both shows) I would've been much more interested in seeing Guys and Dolls than Kinky Boots.

I saw it in both September and December and the full cast weren't on, I read on the other forum that there was a lot of times the full cast weren't on and Preeya wasn't even the final two shows!
