i think for a two act three hour musical it would have to be stripped of many things which makes the play the most amazing play. But there are so many musical moments in the play. It would take one hell of a writer, lyricist and composer but it could. So many other great works have been adapted and changed to create a piece of Musical theatre. Would be interested to know your thoughts.

It was made into an opera in New York. Don't think it would be a fosse musical with jazz hands but anything is possible...

There is certainly an operatic scale to Kushner's writing - but as with the 2004 opera, any musical adaptation would have to condense and refocus on certain elements of the piece to keep to a realistic running time.

But I’m all seriousness, no. It’s too mammoth. I don’t think it would be a good musical. It’s perfect as a play. I just can’t see it working.

Show bones, I would make Prior's trip to heaven into something resembling the color purple meets 42nd street. And can you imagine Roy Cohn with Ethel Rosenberg and Belize! Character actors not known for musicals. Imelda Staunton as Ethel Rosenbrg! Final scene at Bethesda fountain. I've always had a 'Sunday' moment from Sunday in the park with george. Preceded by Tony kushners final prior speech. U see now why I have never written a musical nor intend to lol

Yes it can be turned into a musical, if Les Miserable can - anything can.
Could you imagine the visitation scenes being done by a big tap dance number or when Roy Cohn meets Joe Pitt for the first time in his office, he strips off to a white shirt, black tie and name badge, singing Mormon Hell Dream?
But all seriously would a musical improve on a superb play? If not, it isn’t worth doing.

souchyboyy agree in many ways. Saw it in the 90's and it changed my life. Saw a certain Daniel Craig as Joe Pitt and Jason Issacs as Prior Walter. Contact theatre manchester 1994.
Agree it's an epic but it is so musical if you look it it and strip it down to human relationships.

I'm sure Lord Lloyd Webber has some back catalogue tunes that would suit this perfectly. Afterall we all loved Stephen Ward and Paint Never Dries. Perhaps Bill Kenwright could produce and Marti Pellow play the Angel.
I'm sold.

In all seriousness it has been adapted into an opera. Which apparently is very good. But as much as I’d LIVE for the line “f*** you I’m a Prophet” set to a jaunty tune, I’m not sure I’m ready for that. |

I'd be kinda ready for a mash-up of "f*** you, I'm a prophet" (from "Perestroika - The Musical" - it needs to stay in two parts as a musical, right?) and "All-American prophet" (from "The Book of Mormon"). Also, what do we think about a big, loud ensemble number with all 34 Prior Walter's (yes, that's including 'the bastards') on stage at once? |
