Early vote for Michael Xavier as Bill please (no idea if he's already busy or not though!) Too good looking and “leading man“ no? He’s not meant to fit in to the estate. Michael looks gorgeous already! Is there any such thing as 'too good-looking'? 😉 they could scruff him up a bit I'm sure. It worked for Sandra Bullock on Miss Congeniality 😂

Ooh well if Alex Young is still in it then I'm there. Fingers crossed they'll keep some sort of Prologue discount for the transfer (as they did for Lear)

It would have to be a smaller theatre for it to work I think.

Charlie would be great against Alex Young. It would work - different look, but it’s certainly work!

Oh yeah. Damn. That’s annoying. Oh Christ, does that mean they might shove someone like Jason Manford in this ?! Keep him away from musicals for the love of god

Surprised this is transferring albeit with a new leading man.
I wonder if Matt Lucas jumped ship after missing the press night due to vocal issues, or perhaps he wasn't offered the transfer? I find it strange he would have done the show originally just for a short Chichester run without the possibility of a transfer into town.

Maybe he realised that he just wasn't cut out for it and decided against further involvement. The comments about him here and elsewhere would have given him a clue that press reaction would almost certainly not be good and so avoiding further scrutiny was in his best interests with this particular role.

The Piccadilly has 2 plays lines up so it wouldn’t go there. They would be insane to transfer this terrible production.

I saw the matinee yesterday. I've probably seen every musical produced at Chichester these past ten years and this is easily the worst. I saw Me and my Girl at The Crucible a few years ago and that was terrific in comparison. The whole thing lacked energy and was woefully miscast. Matt Lucas was poor as Snibson, mis-timing most of his gags. His singing was virtually inaudible at times and he has a vocal range of around four notes. For a leading role in a musical only Brigstocke was worse in Barnum. Caroline Quentin, unlike Miriam Margolyes did not have the hauteur required for the Duchess. When singing she has vocal heft but sang most of it sharp. Music theatre royalty like Clive Rowe was scandalously underused. The best performance came from Alex Young but even she, although vocally great, didn't seem quite right for the part. The choreography was uninspired and Lambeth Walk was not the highlight it should have been. The only thing that really impressed me was Lez Brotherston's sets. I agree with every single word you said. An utterly charmless production with every performance completely misjudged.

They’ll probably try and put this in the Savoy

That's what they call getting out in front of the story and trying to control the narrative.... nice try Matt Lucas, but you were all kinds of wrong for Bill.
Charlie Stemp is too young, clean cut and too 'nice' for Bill.
Now that Spongebob has closed, can we please get Gavin Lee back as Bill?

[/quote] The Piccadilly has 2 plays lines up so it wouldn’t go there. Hmmm, wonder what these 2 plays could be? Any clues mrbarnaby? I'm enjoying all these musical predictions but there seems to be no play predictions. It's been a while since the Piccadilly has had a play (excluding the recent short Russian season). Maybe The Price from Bath or the new Charlotte Jones play The Meeting from Chichester? Or Copenhagen?

I have no idea whether he can sing or dance - but I've always thought that Russell Tovey would be great in the part. He's got that effortless Robert Lindsay-eque charm and would do all the fish out of water comedy routines very well - and he's very good at pathos too. True he's not quite from Lambeth - but what's a few miles?!
Given this production tries rather harder than it needs to (not a patch on the original or the Sheffield production) - it would be good to have it centred by someone wouldn't overplay everything and who the audience would naturally root for - but isn't too squeaky clean.

I can’t say which plays yet, but both have links to the National.

Home, I'm Darling and one other? Home, I'm Darling was the first one which occurred to me too! I'd go see it! To be honest, I can't think of any other recent hits from the National which could result in a transfer (which haven't already tansferred, apart from Network which is Broadway bound). I doubt they would bring the touring Macbeth in. The NT haven't been in the Piccadilly since Jumpers and Noises Off.

"Links to the National" is an intriguingly vague way to put it. Is it Mr B covering his back with plausible deniability, or should we be looking a little more outside the box? Maybe something that the NT have helped produce at an outside theatre, or perhaps something that came from a person who is a big name at the NT but not actually for the NT? Granted, I can't think of any examples of either of these suggestions, but nonetheless, I reckon it's worth trying to think sideways on this one.
Otherwise, The Lehman Trilogy? It sold out very efficiently, and was received very well in some quarters, I wouldn't be *surprised* as such to see it go for a second run.
