André and Madeleine have been in love for over fifty years. This weekend, as their daughters visit, something feels unusual. A bunch of flowers arrives, but who sent them? A woman from the past turns up, but who is she? And why does André feel like he isn't there at all?
THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM is a beautifully compelling family drama by Florian Zeller, 'the most exciting playwright of our time' (The Guardian). Starring two of the greatest actors of their generation on stage together for the first time, this major new play from the writer of Olivier Award-Winning The Father is a searing exploration of love, family and the fragility of life.
Jonathan Pryce is an internationally acclaimed, award-winning actor of stage and screen. His varied work includes lauded performances in film including Brazil, Glengarry Glen Ross, Carrington and Evita and on stage in a landmark international tour of The Merchant of Venice, Comedians for which he received a Tony Award and Miss Saigon in the West End and on Broadway. He most recently appeared as the High Sparrow in the hugely successful Game of Thrones.
Dame Eileen Atkins is a three-time Olivier award-winning actress. She is known for her BAFTA and Emmy award-winning performance in Cranford, as well as roles in film including Gosford Park, The Hours and Robin Hood. Her many stage appearances include Honour, Retreat from Moscow and Ellen Terry. She can be seen most recently as Queen Mary in Netflix's The Crown.
'Complex and subtle... a beautiful new play.' - Le Figaro
'Highly sensitive and compassionate... Zeller reminds us that life is beautiful.' - Le Parisien
By Florian Zeller Translated by Christopher Hampton Directed by Jonathan Kent
Show running time: 90 minutes with no interval.

Nice for both of these actors to be returning to the West End. Nice, too, to have a West End play about and starring two older people.

Oh marvellous, Martine McCutcheon and I would like a box if possible. Martine needs somewhere to store the tomatoes.

So does "beautifully compelling family drama" suggest it's going to be more for fans of The Father and The Mother than The Truth and The Lie? 'Cos honestly, Florian Zeller feels like two entirely different playwrights sometimes, and as much as I love his heartbreaking dramas, I don't really have any time at all for his relationship comedies.

It's about grief, loss and a celebration of love, apparently. Not one of his rib-ticklers then.

Nests are £27.25 on the date I'm looking at. I'm sure I have paid more than £20 for a nest before, but considering the limited butt-room, it seems a *little* cheeky on this occasion. I'll probably go for centre row D at £14.75 and lean if necessary this time.

Is there a new by-law that the Wyndham's can only stage productions that are relatively short and without an interval, or ones that are really, really long?

This sounds like another version of The Truth/The Lie (take your pick as they're almost identical) but this time for the older generation. Jonathan Pryce is an excellent mimic so he can channel his inner Alex Hanson and perfect his double takes and 'hmms/whats'. No doubt Alex is lined up as his replacement in case of non-availability

FYI if you have an ATG card and fancy seeing this show early in Richmond you can get great seats in pretty much all of the stalls on Monday 3rd September for about £20 (which compares fairly favourably to similar seats at the Wyndham's )

Chosen to catch this at Richmond, early in the run so unlikely to be as polished as when it gets to the West End but will not have to put up with the crowded streets around Wyndham’s.
Where possible always aim to avoid the traditional West End, being Richmond in early September will be able to walk by the Thames and chill on the Green in relative peace before the play.
Not sure about the play, hope it veers more towards The Father / Mother as Truth / Lie were disappointing in comparison.

Nests are £25. Corners of row C, plus all row D are £12.50, and there are some ends of rows in the upper circle at those prices too. Out of those options what would you plumb for monkey? Are end of rows upper circle better/worse than going up a level? Not entirely so far away would work for me for what i'm guessing will be a talker piece of theatre but would appreciate your opinion.

Balcony, single seats on own, for best description at this time of day check out theatremonkey's website of all info theatre as it'll explain it better than I can, they're weird little sort of sideways seats that have been denoted as nests as there is something of a perching feel, you're pretty high up but quite a good deal.

It appears Mr Shenton was rather confused about this today too…

Doesn't appear to be any love lost between these two now (Shenton and Baz, not Jonathan and Dame Eileen!)
