John Light is very good as Leontes. Like Kenneth Branagh he does divulge in sudden bursts of anger (he almost skewers baby Perdita's face with a sword at one point), and I would have I liked to seen more development in his growing jealousy. But unlike Branagh he doesn't overact it.
The first act belongs to the women. Rachel Stirling's performance as Hermione in the trial is so harrowing. And I have to admit that I liked Niamh Cusack as much as Judi Dench. Whilst Dench beautifully portrayed a Paulina who has seen many a year, Niamh Cusack works the emotion from the character at the important moments. After Rachel Stirling's big moment in the trial, Cusack only has to come on and wrack her grief at what has befallen.
It was only last summer that I saw James Garnon perform for the first time, and he's already become one of my favourite Shakespearean actors. First Jacques and Pericles, and here he steals the second act as Autolycus. Only occasionally does he play for laughs. It's all down to his comic delivery of the text and deadpan wit
The bear scene is just freaky as hell. The best I've seen since the David Farr production

Like Malfi the lights are blown out till its only Antigonus with his lantern, from which we briefly see the dark looming figure behind him. Blink and you'll miss it, and I should imagine its better close up. Then you're just left in darkness for a minute hearing these howling sounds around you. Was it wind or something else?!?!?

Personally I could have just listened to Rachael Stirling all night. She has one of the most delicious voices around. Beautiful and a fabulous actress too.
I'd rather have her in 'The Deep Blue Sea' than McCrory actually.

Seeing this in a few minutes The perfect Mothers Day play! Shame that Cleansed isn't playing on Mothers Day to cater for the more discriminating mothers. I went a screening of Psycho yesterday if that's any consolation. |

Genuinely funny pastoral scenes which is not often the case.....nothing forced.
Wonder how Globes new lighting and sound installations will affect SWP

Understand lighting design and sound design will be core part of new approach.....check out Wonder season brochure..all shows have lx and sound design credited.Guess daytime will be as before with lx at evening shows.....both spaces,I understand.

Oh right thanks, I don't really understand what that might mean in very much layman's terms but will try and remember to see/hear the difference. |

Not quite as good as the Tempest I'd bounced out of after the matinee and unsurprisingly was comparing this to the recent Branagh version but this held it's own. I wasn't a fan of John Light's Leontes, he was definitely angry but I found him quite unpalatable, perhaps in truth I want to find something likeable about the character and this showed that there really wasn't so he was better than I thought. In fairness i'd booked this to see Rachael Stirling so was never going to be a Leontes fan I suppose. This is the first time I've seen Hermione dragged on in such a state, I suppose in the past I had imagined that whilst clearly mad Leontes had at least treated her to some dignity whilst here it would appear that she'd been languishing most unluxuriously, it made this scene physically as well as emotionally charged and uncomfortable. I suppose the indicator of a good actor is that you want them to come back on, as ever with a good Hermione I was left wishing she had more scenes but those what existed where rather electric and well worth the seeing. James Garnon almost stole the show with his Autolycus, quick, confident, very funny and with lots of audience interaction, it will be such a shame if in the new era he no longer plays at the Globe as he is so suited for its set up and would appear to just ooze the verse. Lovely use of light and dark especially for the bear scene, best bear seen so far and if I hadn't known what to expect I think i'd have been pretty jumpy. Niamh Cusack very strong, almost seeming to torture Leontes which as noted seemed perfectly reasonable to me. Sat in the pit and it was pretty darned uncomfortable though not sure how much was seeing two shows in one day.
