I'm surprised nobody has commented on the casting news yet. I have no idea who this Paul Anderson is, but I have a massive girl crush on Audrey Fleurot - I can't believe that of all the French performers they could have dragged across the channel, she's the one. I already considered trying to see her live on stage in Paris at some point, but doubted my French would be up for it. Seeing her in London now with subtitles is just amazing. Naturally I just booked, I'd book to watch her read the phone book. I agree! I love her. The only thing that would make this more exciting is adding Caroline Proust to the cast. Do we know how the bilingual thing is going to work? Will the French cast speak French and the English cast English? That would work for me. Or will one night be all in English, and another night be all in French? I speak French, although I do think I'll need the surtitles to be sure, especially with Moliere. I don't mind surtitles, I watch a lot of Euro crime drama. I had actually been less surprised if it had been Caroline Proust, because Audrey Fleurot seems to be très in demand these days. Hell, they could drag anyone from Engrenages over and I'd watch (how about the lovely Monsieur Fitoussi, mhmm?) My guess is that each will speak their own language throughout the show? Or maybe some scenes will be in French (with the English actors speaking French) and some in English (with everyone speaking English)? I have no idea. But I do appreciate the surtitles, because spoken French is often too fast for me and I can't yell at the performers on stage to slow down

Exactly - the whole cast of Engrenages please! Or in fact a STAGE VERSION!

This has the potential to be another bad TRH production *sigh*

The only way the concept might make some sense to me is if it was used for a play where actors are speaking two different languages and we are expected to accept that they understand each other in their original languages.

You'd hope that some directorial sense was applied to it...as opposed to randomly swapping between the 2 languages whenever fancy requires.

Tickets now on sale through Today Tix but no bargains (yet) - I find it hard to believe the French population of London and French tourists will be clamouring to snap up tickets for this so am going to wait, but do people think fourth row stalls will be close enough to both see what is going on and read the surtitles?

If it's like my experience with subtitles at the ROH, you may want to be further back if the surtitles are right at the top of the stage, as you would be constantly looking between straight ahead and higher up. But I guess it's impossible to tell until we know the staging.

Since surtitles are not a regular thing there (unlike at opera houses) I would assume that they will use the surtitle installation usually used for captioned performances. In most theatres they are at middle height on both sides of the proscenium arch. So Dress Circle is probably the best place to enjoy a show and easily follow the captions - in fact I'm usually given Dress Circle when I specifically book a captioned performance.
The front rows of the stalls are probably too close if you want to avoid looking between performers and surtitles all the time. That said, I've booked Row E in the stalls myself because I rather miss some of the surtitles than the chance to see the lovely Audrey Fleurot somewhat up close.

I saw a Swedish thing with surtitles (and Krister Henriksson) a few years ago, can't remember the play. But the titles were projected onto a very fine curtain at the back of the stage, which worked really well from where I was sitting in the front ish stalls.
Dammit, I really want to see this! It's tricky picking a seat that is worth the journey and doesn't break the bank though.

I agree Elanor, that play was called Doktor Glas and Krister Henriksson gave a spectacular performance. Shame he's not a very nice man in real life.
I saw that play near from the front and I had no problems with the surtitles (I think they had some on the sides too?).

Oh let's go OT for a bit! I collect autographs and I tried on 2 occasions to see if he would sign my programme because he gave an amazing performance in the play. The first time he left via the front of the theatre which is fine I'm not criticising...so I thought I would try another time on the off chance and he did come out the stage door that time and there was just me waiting...I was very polite and he completely blanked me and looked at me like I was something he'd stepped in on the street. His choice I suppose.

His choice I suppose. Blanking you is not too bad. A small child once asked Rolf Harris - at the height of his TV celebrity - for an autograph and he simply replied “F*** off”. Could have been worse I suppose.

Word of warning, just noticed this on TRH website:
'Audrey Fleurot will not be performing on all dates, the role of Elmire will be played by Sophie Duez on the following dates;
June 4, 8, 14, 19, 22, 28 July 3, 5, 9, 10, 20, 27'

I don't think so, she's a seasoned theatre performer and not a soap star.
And with this schedule planned ahead I would guess previous commitments or something. She also has a very young son, so maybe she wants/needs to spend more time with him, dash to and fro on the Eurostar or have him come over with Dad?

Just take a load of days off from work any time we want when we’ve got young children ? That’s handy.

Maybe she should think of her child/filming commitments before agreeing to a run in the theatre abroad?Just saying...
