Jenna was Fantine in 1991 I think. We had a day out on one of our first Saturdays at uni to see LM and she was in it.

Yeah, I think Jenna has done Les Mis a few times. She understudied Eponine and Fantine in 1987, and then returned to play Fantine in 1991 and 2000.

Oh I loved that. Thank you, Enjoyed her Fantine several times way back then. I also recall a very fine Marius played by Darryl Knock who was, for me, the first Marius I saw to swoon for. I would have jumped on stage and bitch-slapped Cosette for her blandness had I not had that restraining order.
But listening to the recording makes me yearn even for the coughing, spluttering, rustling noises of live theatre. I actually did feel an added moment of poignancy listening to it.

The adverts in the souvenir brochure for the Les Mis concert say that Hamilton, Les Mis and Mary Poppins will all reopen in May. |

I guess this would mean they would have to cancel the run.

The staged show (rather than concert) due to reopen 31/05. Ive booked the matinee on the 5th before Phantom reopening night (just had an email as I cad my January show cancelled and turned into a voucher) Well I got the priority booking link but haven't had my voucher from our cancelled show on December 27th so had to pay. Booked the two reduced-price seats behind conductor I always go for. They usually sell fast. Rather stressful though, as I kept getting a message that I had to enable Javascript in order to book, it was already enabled and always has been on this PC. Tried blocking and unblocking Javascript, and changing browser and that eventually worked though I had to join the queue again. Interesting that the show now runs Tuesday to Sunday with no weekday matinee. |

Only one show on Sunday (2.30pm) and yes only 7 shows each week throughout the current booking period, right through to 3 October. Maybe a weekday matinee will be added later. I wondered if they are holding back Wednesday matinees for general sale next week. I notice Mary Poppins has done the same, with only 7 performances per week (again a Sunday afternoon show, but no Tuesday evening). Or maybe they're just seeing how it sells, if foreign tourism doesn't return immediately. |

Having a rummage and just found my Les Mis programme from the 1993 UK Tour. Just look at the size of that orchestra! I know that times change and things move on, but I can't help but feel huge pangs of nostalgia and sentiment for the old days of HUGE UK tours. Out of interest, does anyone know when they dropped the third woodwind and extra strings? I know the orchestra was downsized when it moved to the Queen's, and I know that the orchestrations changed for the 2010 UK Tour, and then eventually in the West End, but it would be interesting to know if anyone has a 'history' of the orchestral changes that Les Mis has experienced over the decades. I was saw a group perform the show at the EdFringe in 2016 - it was bloody fantastic - near West End quality - and the MD had the original Les Mis synth 'patches' on both keyboards, and it took me back to my days in the wings at the Palace. I hope everyone is safe and well. X  |

Without wanting to assume too much, looking at the names listed another observation would be how the average age of musicians in the pit has decreased somewhat over the years. |

I think my favourite thing about the all-star concert was the orchestra, all those strings and especially the harp. Michael Ball is not the best Javert, but THAT orchestra totally made his "Stars" a transfixing experience

Workshops in and of themselves can take a variety of forms depending on the show, producer and context. Varying from a table read-through, to an extended group audition right through to something resembling a rehearsal. With new productions, they are an opportunity for the writers and director to have professional, quality performers act and perform their material, with both casting ideas and script changes in mind. New book musicals especially often workshop for potentially years and can have hundreds of performers attached before it is even formally greenlit. With long runners, workshops tend to be an opportunity for agents to put forward talent to be seen, perhaps with a number of roles in mind. They may last part of a day, all day or even several days depending on their purpose. In this case, I suspect something resembling a closed group audition and opportunity for producers and casting directors to see talent who perhaps haven't already been seen through the usual casting calls. They would've had him sing a few numbers for key parts (probably Javert and Valjean, I'd assume) and seen if anything clicks for them. Perhaps playing short scenes opposite existing/former cast who know the show well. Generally, it would be unusual for a one on one "traditional style" (i.e. you're all called into the rehearsal space, do a group movement exercise, called in one by one to do your solo, wait and then get called back or sent home) audition to be called a workshop, at least in my experience.
